Sizewell C\u00a0has opened a new office in Manchester as it looks to attract talent\u00a0in the region\u00a0to\u00a0join\u00a0the nuclear power project\u00a0currently under construction in Suffolk.\u00a0<\/p>\n
Sizewell C\u00a0\u2013 which\u00a0last week\u00a0reached Financial Close<\/a>\u00a0\u2013 has previously committed to investing \u00a32.5bn in the\u00a0North of England and\u00a0creating 13,000 jobs\u00a0in the region. After almost two years of construction, the project\u00a0has already delivered \u00a3168m in contracts to businesses in the\u00a0North.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n The opening of the new office, in New York Street in Manchester, is another sign that the benefits and opportunities of the project stretch right across the UK\u00a0and\u00a0is a reflection of\u00a0the talent base that exists in the area.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n The\u00a0North is an important region for nuclear talent and skills, with\u00a0a third of the total UK nuclear workforce\u00a0based in the\u00a0area,\u00a0with\u00a0the majority of those in the\u00a0North-West.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n Nigel Cann, Joint Managing Director of Sizewell C, said:\u00a0<\/b>\u201cSizewell\u00a0C\u00a0is a project\u00a0that will\u00a0benefit\u00a0the whole of the UK, not just by generating energy, but by delivering\u00a0thousands of jobs,\u00a0growth\u00a0and economic benefits right across the\u00a0country.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n \u201cBy opening a new office here in Manchester, we can part of the strong concentration of nuclear skills and experience here in the\u00a0North and harness talent that might not otherwise have joined our project.\u00a0And\u00a0it\u2019s\u00a0another step in ensuring that Britain has the nuclear workforce it needs for the future.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n A British project\u00a0whose largest investor is the UK\u00a0government, Sizewell C will support thousands of jobs across the UK,\u00a0will\u00a0create\u00a01,500 apprenticeships, and\u00a0will\u00a0deliver over 70% of its construction value to British suppliers, increasing to 90% over the lifetime of the project.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n Last month,\u00a0the project\u00a0announced a six-year supply contract with\u00a0Urenco<\/a>\u00a0for the provision of enriched uranium services: a contract that\u00a0will help to support around 1,000 existing highly skilled jobs at\u202fUrenco\u2019s enrichment site at\u00a0Capenhurst<\/b><\/a>, near Chester in the North-West.\u00a0<\/p>\n Urenco\u00a0are\u00a0one of\u00a0a number of\u00a0suppliers\u00a0based\u00a0in the\u00a0North\u00a0who\u00a0were\u00a0present\u00a0to celebrate the opening of Sizewell C\u2019s northern office\u00a0this week, alongside suppliers\u00a0such as\u00a0Exentec\u00a0Hargreaves\u00a0and Laing\u00a0O\u2019Rourke.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n Exentec\u00a0Hargreaves, which has manufacturing facilities in Bury, signed a contract\u00a0with Sizewell C last year to deliver to deliver HVAC (heating, ventilation, and air conditioning)\u00a0for the project.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n Ryan Gorman, Managing Director,\u00a0Exentec\u00a0Hargreaves, said<\/b>: \u201cExentec\u00a0Hargreaves is proud to be part of the Sizewell C project, which\u00a0represents\u00a0a vital investment in the UK\u2019s clean energy future and in the long-term sustainability of our engineering workforce. With over 150 years of heritage, including a nuclear legacy that began in the 1950s, we have always championed British engineering and the development of skilled talent, delivering nuclear safety.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n \u201cSizewell C enables us to continue that commitment, creating opportunities for apprentices, investing in our manufacturing facilities in Bury, Greater Manchester, and developing the next generation of nuclear HVAC engineers and installers. This project gives businesses across the North the confidence to invest, grow, and contribute to the UK\u2019s net zero ambitions.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n The\u00a0office opening event,\u00a0on Thursday 13 November,\u00a0saw\u00a0Sizewell C highlight how\u00a0businesses in the North can\u00a0benefit\u00a0from being \u201csupplier ready\u201d, and\u00a0there was\u00a0insight from University of Liverpool academic,\u00a0Professor Joanne Meehan, who focused\u00a0on procurement strategy.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n Bill Esterson MP, Chair of the ESNZ committee, said<\/b>:\u00a0\u201cThis exciting development begins to show us what Britain\u2019s modern industrial strategy will look like in action. With the valuable links already forged with Liverpool University, this builds linkages between\u00a0regional\u00a0research,\u00a0development\u00a0and skills hubs to spread the benefits of major infrastructure investment right across the country, from Southeast to Northwest.\u00a0<\/p>\n \u201cAfter decades of neglect that eroded the\u00a0UK\u2019s global nuclear energy advantage, now we see a real move towards strategically rebuilding a national\u00a0backbone of skilled engineers and technicians. 90% of Sizewell C\u2019s construction value will\u00a0ultimately be\u00a0delivered to British suppliers: these linkages are also developing skills and roles for the wider energy transition and help to secure domestic supply chains.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n
