{"id":569961,"date":"2025-11-14T14:04:13","date_gmt":"2025-11-14T14:04:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/569961\/"},"modified":"2025-11-14T14:04:13","modified_gmt":"2025-11-14T14:04:13","slug":"germany-slashes-climate-finance-in-blow-to-developing-worlds-cop30-priority","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/569961\/","title":{"rendered":"Germany slashes climate finance in blow to developing world&#8217;s COP30 priority"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The German government has decided to slash its budget for helping developing nations cut their greenhouse gas emissions and deal with the effects of a warming planet \u2013 right in the middle of global climate talks in which finance is a central and highly sensitive issue.<\/p>\n<p>Poorer nations insist at every annual climate summit that countries that became rich by exploiting fossil fuels \u2013 meaning Europe and the US, according to an outdated UN definition \u2013 ought to help them mitigate the impacts of a warming planet.<\/p>\n<p>Germany, which emits around 2% of global CO2 emissions, contributed \u20ac6 billion towards the \u20ac100 billion annual global climate finance goal in 2024, in line with a 2021 pledge by former chancellor Angela Merkel.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>But an agreement at last year\u2019s COP29 summit in Azerbaijan will see the annual target rise to \u20ac300 billion by 2035. Berlin is pulling out. Critics say Berlin\u2019s U-turn could damage trust in the broader climate action process.<\/p>\n<p>Euractiv has reviewed a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bundeshaushalt.de\/static\/daten\/2025\/soll\/draft\/epl23.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">draft budget<\/a> hammered out during a gruelling 15-hour negotiation in Berlin on Thursday, which shows that cuts to the development ministry budget will result in an annual reduction of around \u20ac1.5 billion.<\/p>\n<p>Under the heading of \u2018bilateral government development cooperation\u2019 \u2013 also known as \u2018budget line 2301\u2019 \u2013 the ministry\u2019s fiscal headroom is being significantly reduced, from around \u20ac6 billion to just \u20ac4.58 billion.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEven Germany\u2019s development ministry no longer expects the country to meet its \u20ac6 billion climate finance pledge,\u201d said green MP Jamila Sch\u00e4fer. \u201cThe gap between promises and action is measured in rising temperatures, lost livelihoods and broken trust.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The development ministry said \u201cfinal figures\u201d for a given year could only be verified in the following autumn.<\/p>\n<p>The latest development comes almost midway through the COP30 meeting in Bel\u00e9m, Brazil, and just weeks after Berlin <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bundesumweltministerium.de\/en\/pressrelease\/international-climate-finance-2024-germany-remains-reliable-partner-in-global-climate-policy\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">trumpeted its 2024 climate spending<\/a> while declaring Germany a \u201creliable partner in global climate policy\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>(rh, ow)<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"The German government has decided to slash its budget for helping developing nations cut their greenhouse gas emissions&hellip;\n","protected":false},"author":2,"featured_media":569962,"comment_status":"","ping_status":"","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[5310],"tags":[2000,299,1824],"class_list":{"0":"post-569961","1":"post","2":"type-post","3":"status-publish","4":"format-standard","5":"has-post-thumbnail","7":"category-germany","8":"tag-eu","9":"tag-europe","10":"tag-germany"},"share_on_mastodon":{"url":"https:\/\/pubeurope.com\/@uk\/115548432855257969","error":""},"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/569961","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/2"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=569961"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/569961\/revisions"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/569962"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=569961"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=569961"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=569961"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
