It has always been my dream to come back and these opportunities do not come around too often.”

But it’s clear that Edwards’ connection to Wolves meant more than anything, having spent time at Molineux previously as a coach and a player.

However, one thing that will prove difficult for Edwards is using any ties he still has to Middlesbrough, as the bridge has very much been burned.

Steve Gibson refusing to do any kind of business with Wolves

Quite often, a manager takes up a role at a new club and goes on to steal a couple of his former players to provide them with a bigger platform, but that won’t be the case with Rob Edwards at Wolves.

Sources close to Molineux News claim Middlesbrough owner Steve Gibson has already made it known to Rob Edwards not to even think about trying to raid The Riverside in January, and beyond.

Edwards is known to hugely admire homegrown pair Hayden Hackney and Dael Fry, but Boro are pushing for promotion come January and do not want to sell their star names.

Any enquiries from Molineux would get a ‘short shrift’ response from Boro.

Fry was made captain by Edwards, whilst Hackney was outstanding for him and has been one of the stand-out players in the Championship.

However, there is no chance Steve Gibson will do business with Wolves, no matter what. Even if the unlikely scenario emerges that he would consider deals for either in January, it would not be with Wolves.

Hayden Hackney is exactly what Wolves need

Wolves tried for Hayden Hackney in the summer, but left it too late as Rob Edwards himself rejected their advances on transfer deadline day.

You can’t help but feel that they’ve missed the boat on that one in two respects. He’s attracting the attention of clubs in higher positions, and Steve Gibson’s stance is clear.

Which position do Wolves need to prioritise in January?

That shouldn’t put Wolves off signing someone of his profile. A creative midfielder who can advance the ball, take players on and really create in the final third.

Joao Gomes has proved creative at times, but Andre plays more of a sitting role, whilst others can’t be trusted.

Stats (Premier League)

Joao Gomes

Andre

Shot-creating actions

21

8

Passes that lead to shots

18

4

Through balls

1

0

Crosses

10

1

Marshall Munetsi and Ladislav Krejci have also been used in midfield.
