An online petition on the Parliamentary website has called on the <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.birminghammail.co.uk\/all-about\/dwp\" target=\"\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">DWP<\/a> to introduce a big state pension change.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"birminghammail\">The petition warns: &#8220;Increase New State Pension and pay to all, abolish the old Basic State Pension.&#8221; It adds: &#8220;We think the government should put all our elderly onto the New State Pension, increase the New State Pension to a good percentage of average earnings and abolish the old &#8216;Basic State Pension&#8217;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"birminghammail\">&#8220;We believe those on the Basic State Pension should be paid the difference accrued, since the New State Pension&#8217;s introduction, between the Basic State Pension and New State Pension.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"birminghammail\"><a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.birminghammail.co.uk\/motoring\/motoring-news\/drivers-face-340-bill-even-32865762\" target=\"\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong class=\"Strong_strong__e2x35\">READ MORE Some drivers face \u00a3340 bill in &#8216;even steeper&#8217; UK pay-per-mile car tax band<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"birminghammail\">&#8220;Britain&#8217;s basic State Pension is currently \u00a3176.45 per week. Britain&#8217;s New State Pension is currently \u00a3230.25 a week. Britain&#8217;s average weekly earnings (AWE) were estimated at \u00a3722 in March 2025, by the Office for National Statistics.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"birminghammail\">The petition has been backed by 358 signatures &#8211; with 10,000 signatures required to get a government response and at 100,000 signatures, this petition will be considered for debate in Parliament.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"birminghammail\">The petition, created by Michael Thompson, has a deadline of 13 December 2025.
