At first glance, it seems to be a straightforward picture of a spider sitting on a web.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/1763210597_888_scale;webp=auto;jpeg_quality=60.jpg\"  width=\"792\" height=\"731\" style=\"display:block;height:auto;aspect-ratio:792 \/ 731\" loading=\"lazy\"\/>George Olah<\/p>\n<p data-element-index=\"0\">But if you look more closely, you\u2019ll realize you\u2019ve been tricked \u2014 the \u201cspider\u201d is actually a cleverly-constructed decoy.<\/p>\n<p data-element-index=\"1\">A group of scientists recently came out with a <a href=\"https:\/\/onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/doi\/10.1002\/ece3.72371\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">groundbreaking study<\/a> detailing a never-before-documented spider behavior. In the paper, the researchers describe how they\u2019ve observed two species of Cyclosa spiders building imitation arachnids and weaving them into their webs.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/1763210599_812_scale;webp=auto;jpeg_quality=60.jpg\"  width=\"792\" height=\"615\" style=\"display:block;height:auto;aspect-ratio:792 \/ 615\" loading=\"lazy\"\/>Lawrence E. Reeves<\/p>\n<p data-element-index=\"0\">Many orb-weaving spiders are known for constructing stabilimenta, or web decorations, which are typically nothing more complex than a spiral or zigzag pattern. But these two Cyclosa species, located in Peru and the Philippines, are able to use silk, plant debris and insect carcasses to build convincing spider dummies in as little as 90 minutes.<\/p>\n<p data-element-index=\"1\">\u201c[T]hese spiders construct stabilimenta composed of detritus and silk, arranging the debris in the web into a shape that visually resembles the silhouette of a larger spider,\u201d the authors of the paper wrote.<\/p>\n<p data-element-index=\"2\">But what purpose do these imitation spiders serve? The researchers strongly suspect that the Cyclosa build them to ward off predators such as birds or lizards.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/1763210600_602_scale;webp=auto;jpeg_quality=60.jpg\"  width=\"792\" height=\"523\" style=\"display:block;height:auto;aspect-ratio:792 \/ 523\" loading=\"lazy\"\/>Richard Kirby<\/p>\n<p data-element-index=\"0\">\u201cThis structure may serve as a \u2018decoy\u2019 that serves an anti-predator function of misdirecting or repelling the attacks of some predators,\u201d the authors of the paper wrote.<\/p>\n<p data-element-index=\"1\">Both species of Cyclosas\u2019 bodies are under 1 cm long, but the mock spiders they build are much longer. The large decoys give off the illusion that a much more threatening arachnid is occupying the web. The stabilimenta are so convincing that even the researchers mistook one for an actual spider on an early trip into the field.<\/p>\n<p data-element-index=\"2\">\u201cOn average, the length of the stabilimenta was 3.3 times that of the spider&#8217;s body length,\u201d the authors of the paper wrote.<\/p>\n<p data-element-index=\"3\">The image below illustrates the size difference between the spider (left) and the imitation (right):<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/1763210601_225_scale;webp=auto;jpeg_quality=60.jpg\"  width=\"792\" height=\"531\" style=\"display:block;height:auto;aspect-ratio:792 \/ 531\" loading=\"lazy\"\/>Lawrence E. Reeves<\/p>\n<p data-element-index=\"0\">More research is needed in order to fully understand the many ways the spiders are making use of these web decorations.
