Now that’s what we call a royal wave! Sophie Duchess of Edinburgh<\/a> is on official duties in Peru, as part of an extended tour of South and Central America, and she\u2019s just unveiled a hair look that\u2019s as surprising as it is on-trend.<\/p>\n

The popular royal is known for her pretty but practical hair <\/a>looks when she\u2019s on official walkabout, from ponytails <\/a>and scrunchies<\/a> to casual half-up, half-down styles<\/a>. But for her latest appearance in Peru, she pulled a new one out of the bag: the ghost wave<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Laid-back but luxe, this effortless wave look has been a huge trend in the celebrity world this year, seen on everyone from Trinny<\/a> to Amal Clooney<\/a>. Now it was the turn of Sophie to show off the loose, stretched out curls as she cosied up to another royal favourite: Paddington Bear!<\/p>\n

Sophie has been making waves in Peru with her hair look<\/p>\n

Sophie, 60, was photographed clutching the cuddly Peru native during a visit to the British Embassy in the capital, Lima. Her blonde hair sat in soft, barely-there waves around her collarbones, the shape perfectly balanced by the gently rounded layers round her face. <\/p>\n

It\u2019s a look perfected by celebrity hairdresser Greg Hill<\/a>, who has used it to guide the aforementioned Trinny away from her more \u2018curly wurly\u2019 style towards a soft, sexy, modern respin. Oh, and did we mention it\u2019s perfect for 60-somethings like Sophie and Trinny?<\/p>\n

The royal wave – Sophie cuddles up to Paddington<\/p>\n

\u2018Loose, stretched-out waves, what I like to call the \u201cTrinny wave\u201d, are brilliant for giving hair a youthful, modern, lived-in movement,\u2019 says Greg<\/a>. \u2018The beauty of this look is that it flatters almost every face shape and hair length, because it gives life and movement without being overtly voluminous. The key is creating shape that looks like it has naturally occurred, rather being structured.\u2019 <\/p>\n

Trinny has swapped her curlier style for a looser, cool girl wave, created by hairdresser Greg Hill<\/p>\n

There are a couple of ways to achieve the look, both of which he\u2019s helpfully decoded into tutorials. <\/p>\n

Version one: if your hair has a slight natural movement rather than being stick-straight (both Sophie and Trinny fall into this category) you can do it by blowdrying alone. <\/p>\n

Take a section of hair no wider than the width of your brush,\u2019 says Greg. \u2018Using a medium to large round brush (I love The Lola range from The Bristle Brush Company), prepare to blow-dry the section if though you were going to blow-dry it straight.’<\/p>\n

\u2018Beginning at the root, slowly draw the brush through, stopping midway. Rotate the brush to create a twist in the section before continuing to draw the brush through to the ends. Repeat this a few times, working slowly and methodically until the section is dry and has an elongated \u2018S\u2019 shape. It should have a slight spring to it without being too curly.\u2019<\/p>\n

If your hair is naturally straight (and\/or you\u2019re not confident with a brush + nozzle combo), you\u2019ll want to create the ghost wave with a tong, he says.<\/p>\n

\u2018Take small, non-uniform sections and wrap from root to tip. Hold the ends out to keep them straight and relaxed. Hold for just a few seconds – enough to bend, not curl.\u2019 <\/p>\n

Let the hair cool completely, adds Greg. \u2018Then, flip your head forward and gently rake through with your fingers or a wide-tooth comb. Finish with a texturising spray to break up the movement and add volume. The result is modern, undone waves that look like you woke up fabulous, not freshly curled.\u2019<\/p>\n

It\u2019s a beautiful look \u2013 and now officially royally approved!<\/p>\n
