The festive season usually means planning a day out or two with the kids and there’s so much to choose from this year.<\/p>\n

Whether it’s a trip to the one of the region’s many magical light trails, like the new Northern Lights event heading to Heaton Park<\/a> this year, or a visit to the Trafford<\/a> Centre’s Christmas fair and ice rink, there are loads of family-friendly activities taking place in and around Greater Manchester.<\/p>\n

Shaun The Sheep, Aviva Studios<\/p>\n

Shaun the Sheep\u2019s Circus Show is making its UK premiere in Manchester this Christmas and there are lots more activities taking place alongside it.<\/p>\n

Brought to the stage by the internationally-acclaimed Australian circus ensemble Circa and Academy Award-winning, independent studio Aardman, it’s coming to Aviva Studios from December 11 to January 4.<\/p>\n

Combining the extreme physicality and awe-inspiring feats of Circa and the playful charm of the multi-award-winning, globally successful Shaun the Sheep, ‘a visual spectacle for the entire family’ is promised, ‘packed full of Aardman\u2019s signature comedy and outright hilarity, as the Circa ensemble continues to blur the lines between movement, dance, theatre and circus’.<\/p>\n

Shaun and the Flock will entertain the audience through ‘incredible feats of daredevil acrobatics and vibrant circus skills’.<\/p>\n

To celebrate the show, a free Shaun the Sheep Trail is also happening around Aviva Studios. The Find the Flock sculpture trail, created by Wild in Art, will see six Shaun the Sheep sculptures hiding across St John\u2019s and Spinningfields<\/a> between November 27 and January 4.<\/p>\n

From December 11 to January 11 there’ll be some Winter Family Drop-Ins offering free creative activities for families inspired by Factory International’s winter shows.<\/p>\n

Drop by the Social for free paper-crafting activity packs for children including: Create your own Shaun the Sheep bunting, Doodle and Draw inspired by David Hockney: Bigger & Closer (not smaller & further away) and The Moonwalkers, Paper doll dress-up inspired by VOGUE: Inventing the Runway.<\/p>\n

Other free sessions include Drop-in PlayStation, where kids can choose from EA Sports FC26, Space Invaders Forever and Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga. These are running from November 8 to December 31.<\/p>\n

And from December 17 to January 10, there’s Glam Station, with nail art and face, body art and temporary tattoos.<\/p>\n

Christmas Fair, Trafford Centre<\/p>\n

The festive season kicks off in full at the Trafford Centre this weekend with two characters parades on Saturday, November 15.<\/p>\n

The Christmas Parade<\/a> takes place at 11.30am and 2.30pm and will feature favourite characters such as Bluey and Bingo, Paddington, Gruffalo, Stickman, Hey Duggee and of course, Father Christmas himself. The events is free, but is very popular so it’s advised to get there early to grab a good spot.<\/p>\n

And there’s lots more happening at the centre<\/a> this Christmas too, including the return of its grotto<\/a>, the huge Christmas fair and an ice rink.<\/p>\n

The big wheel is already up offering views over the Trafford<\/a> skyline and beyond – with tickets costing \u00a35 for kids and \u00a37 for adults – and next month will see the opening of Gandeys Snowstorm Wish inside the big top.<\/p>\n

The fairground – open from November 22 to January 4 – will feature a range of rides and there’ll be Christmas market huts outside it serving up seasonal delights such as mulled wine and Bratwurst.<\/p>\n

Entry costs \u00a33 online, or \u00a33.50 at the gate, and visitors buy tokens costing \u00a31 each to pay for the rides, which cost between 1 and 5 tokens each.<\/p>\n

The rink is open between the same dates, giving visitors the chance to skate under the stars with friends and family, before warming up with a cup of hot chocolate.<\/p>\n

Tickets cost \u00a312.50 for ages 13 plus and \u00a310 for under 12s off peak and \u00a315, or \u00a312.50 at peak times. For a family of four – either two adults and two kids, or one adult and three kids, it’s \u00a340 off peak and \u00a350 peak.<\/p>\n

The grotto opens from November 22 and will once again be housed in the the former Frankie & Benny\u2019s restaurant outside The Great Hall. This year, families are set to ‘become part of a magical mission\u2026 saving Christmas<\/a> cheer’.<\/p>\n

Gandeys’ show runs from December 5 to January 4 and invites guests to step into the frost-kissed realm of Snowstorm Wish, ‘where world-class figure skaters, jaw-dropping circus artists, and breathtaking visuals come together in a magical blend of storytelling, artistry, and adrenaline’. Manchester’s huge ice rink is back open in the city centre<\/a>, partially powered by a wind turbine with a cute snow globe attached to the bottom of it for visitors to skate around.<\/p>\n

There’s another new addition to this year’s rink in the form of a ‘Skate on and Skate off Caff\u00e8 Nero Pit Stop\u2019, available during skating for those needing a break and a hot chocolate or mulled wine, plus a VIP ticket option allowing for a fast-track entry into the rink.<\/p>\n

This year’s rink forms part of a first-of-its-kind partnership with Octopus energy, which has supplied the 15-metre tall 15kW turbine.<\/p>\n

And the good news for Octopus customers is that anyone signed up to its reward scheme Octoplus can get a two for the price of one ticket offer.<\/p>\n

Skating sessions last up to 45 minutes, organisers recommend ticketholders to arrive 30 to 40 minutes before their session to get ready to take to the ice.<\/p>\n

Manchester’s popular Christmas Parade, billed as ‘the heartwarming event of the festive season’ is returning on Sunday, December 7<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Now in its fourth year, the annual parade has been a festive favourite with Mancunians since first taking place in the city centre in December 2022.<\/p>\n

In previous years the spectacular Christmas<\/a> parade has featured life-sized festive animals, a toy procession, lollipop dancers, giant snails and of course Santa weaving their way along the city’s streets.<\/p>\n

The parade is set to be filled with music and laughter with the return of Manchester’s very own, spectacular Elf Express, complete with VIP passenger Santa hitching a ride on his way to the North Pole, together with his trusty team of elves.<\/p>\n

And of course it wouldn’t be the Manchester Christmas Parade without everyone’s favourite, the enchanting Snow Queen mesmerising all as she sits in her giant snow globe sliding her way through the city streets.<\/p>\n

In past years the parade has set off at 12pm, but organisers say the exact timings of the 2025 parade will be confirmed nearer the parade date.<\/p>\n

A new Christmas Family Experience is coming to Greater Manchester from the team behind The Hideaway children’s play and community centre.<\/p>\n

The Hideaway, part of the Hidden Treasure Trust, a grassroots charity supporting families facing poverty in Partington, is promising to bring ‘something truly special’ to Altrincham<\/a>, with ‘a magical and affordable Christmas Experience that gives back’.<\/p>\n

It’s been loaned a warehouse space to create the event where visitors will journey through eight immersive themed zones, including Narnia, The Grinch, Santa\u2019s Grotto, and The Gingerbread House.<\/p>\n

The event will feature crafts, food, and festive fun, all designed to inspire families to give back this Christmas. Every penny raised will support The Hideaway\u2019s vital work helping local families thrive and break the cycle of poverty.<\/p>\n

There’ll be the opportunity to visit Santa as an optional extra, as well as a VR sleigh ride, inflatable Christmas slide and the festive Starry Night Caf\u00e9 for Christmassy treats.<\/p>\n

Knowsley Safari\u2019s illuminated festive extravaganza, Enchanted, is returning this winter.<\/p>\n

The event sees a spectacular trail of illuminated animal displays come alive after dark, transforming the Foot Safari into ‘a world of colour and festive fantasia’.<\/p>\n

Running from November 22 to December 23, it will feature life-size light-up animals including giraffes, penguins, zebras and polar bears \u2013 plus, of course, Santa\u2019s Grotto.<\/p>\n

Visitors can explore an Enchanted Woodland, take selfies in neon geometric-shaped walkways \u2013 and for the budding actors in the family, perform in their own shadow puppet show for everyone else to see.<\/p>\n

The magical Winter Village, with crackling fire pits and popular marshmallow toasting, will also be returning, as well as rides and amusements, as well as festive food and drinks.<\/p>\n

Tickets for the Santa Specials at East Lancs Railway<\/a> fly out each year, but there are some spaces remaining for the ‘magical’ trips, which give families the chance to enjoy a steam train journey through Lancashire’s very own winter wonderland.<\/p>\n

The seasonal event attracts more than 40,000 people each year and features decorated stations, brass bands, carol singers and costumed characters.<\/p>\n

Chester Zoo has revealed a raft of new additions for 2025, with organisers promising this year\u2019s trail will be its ‘brightest ever’.<\/p>\n

The event will see the zoo transform into a spectacular winter wonderland with colour-changing forests, glowing animals, show-stopping puppets and a host of new immersive installations.<\/p>\n

Among the exciting new highlights is The Airquarium, ‘a dreamlike world filled with floating, glowing sea creatures’, and the Bubble Walk, ‘a joyful explosion of light and colour’. The experience continues as guests step into a series of immersive walkthrough installations, ‘each one bursting with festive wonder and designed to ignite the imagination’.<\/p>\n

Following the walkthrough journey, guests are invited to discover The North Pole Playground – an illuminated playground space in Mayfield Park designed for both children and grown-ups to play, explore, and let their imaginations run wild.<\/p>\n

Guests will then be invited to climb aboard The Twilight Express – a neon-lit train experience that promises to ‘capture the excitement of a festive journey to the North Pole, with shimmering carriages filled with bursts of steam, enchanting sound effects and interactive controls’.<\/p>\n

The Twilight Tales experience leads into ‘a cosy festive celebration’ where guests can gather around the firepit to toast complimentary marshmallows, enjoy hot chocolate or mulled wine, and for the little ones to get creative in Santa\u2019s Workshop with crafts, plus free face painting.<\/p>\n

Families can capture ‘the perfect festive photo’ on Santa\u2019s sleigh and send Christmas wishes through the giant magical mail chute.<\/p>\n

Winter Island, billed as the north\u2019s largest heated indoor and outdoor winter festival, is now a beloved fixture of Manchester\u2019s festive calendar. Promising to transform ‘the city\u2019s most iconic park into a glittering wonderland of 16 awe-inspiring light illuminations’, tickets are now on sale for Northern Lights Manchester.<\/p>\n

From the creators of the popular Kendal Calling and Bluedot festivals, previous From The Fields trails, including Christmas<\/a> at Bute Park and Northern Lights in Leeds and Newcastle, have been a huge success.<\/p>\n

It was back in May when the company first announced its plan for Heaton Park<\/a>, but now more details have been revealed.<\/p>\n

With the first glimpse of this year\u2019s trail map and preview of five illuminations, visitors can now start to visualise its scale and plan their festive journey through 16 ‘breathtaking’ lighting arrangements, synchronised to original soundtracks within the iconic park.<\/p>\n

Each illumination has been designed by the creative teams behind headline installations at Kew Gardens, Netflix premieres and Glastonbury festival.<\/p>\n

At the end of the trail, visitors will find a variety of festive treats within the Christmas Village, including mulled wine, hot chocolate, and toasted marshmallows, as well as vintage fairground rides.<\/p>\n

Northern Lights Manchester runs from November 20 until December 31. Opening times are 4.15pm to 8.15pm (times may vary during off-peak days), and entry slots are every 15 minutes.<\/p>\n

It’s expected to take visitors around 90 minutes to enjoy the mile-long route.<\/p>\n

Yuletide is an immersive, theatrical journey that promises a magical escape for the whole family. Audiences are invited to step into a world of winter folklore and enjoy live music, cosy campfire stories, marshmallow toasting, and an impressive fire-juggling show \u2013 and new for this year, a troupe of leaping acrobats, a live music stage in the woods, and enchanting characters appearing round every corner.<\/p>\n

There’s also a glittering light trail through Tatton\u2019s famous gardens, with interactive light installations, glowing puppets, and characters inspired by festive tales.<\/p>\n

Another new element is the wild Wassail, inspired by a centuries-old Twelfth Night tradition of singing and banging pots and pans together to bring good fortune for the coming year.<\/p>\n

For those looking for something a bit different this Christmas then you could head to Zip World at Heaton Park which is hosting a Grumpy Grotto event.<\/p>\n

The attraction is set to be transformed into an alternative experience for kids of all ages as they embark on a quest to save their Christmas presents from the ever-present Grump.<\/p>\n

Launching on December 6 and open on selected dates right up until Christmas Eve, this ‘fun-filled activity’ will see kids from ages three and upwards, bounce, slide and climb their way around Zip World Manchester\u2019s popular Treetop Nets as they attempt to outsmart the Grump.<\/p>\n

Successful adventures will see little ones enter the Grumpy Grotto where gifts are waiting to be stolen back and Christmas to be saved.<\/p>\n

On selected evenings between November 26 and December 30, visitors are invited to experience the garden after dark, where twinkling installations, seasonal music, and warming treats await.<\/p>\n

As dusk falls, the garden comes alive with 24 dazzling light artworks, including 13 installations never before seen at RHS Bridgewater and four brand new creations designed exclusively for RHS Glow.<\/p>\n

This year\u2019s trail promises moments of wonder around every corner, with interactive experiences, poetic sculptures, and glowing surprises that will delight all ages.<\/p>\n

Among the highlights are two UK premieres. At Garden Cottage, internationally acclaimed light artist Tine Bech presents Enchanted Exchange, a playful installation where visitors can control the colours of the light show, connecting RHS Glow with Lightwaves Salford<\/a> via a live webcam.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, in the tranquil Paradise Garden, Breathe by Kaleider floats gently on the lily pond – a kinetic sculpture that moves with the wind and light, inviting quiet reflection.<\/p>\n

Rochdale is getting its own real ice rink for the first time in around 20 years.<\/p>\n

Forming part of Santa’s Village at Rochdale Town Hall Square,<\/a> ‘a magical experience for all ages and skill levels’ is promised at the rink, which opens on Friday, November 21.<\/p>\n

Anyone aged four and above will be able to skate, with skate aids available to hire for children under 120cm if they need them.<\/p>\n

Santa’s Village will also offer the chance to book for Santa’s Grotto at the Riverside, where Father Christmas will greet families into the cosy front room of his ‘authentic, rustic’ grotto.<\/p>\n

And there’s lots more festive fun taking place in the town this Christmas, including the return of Ignite Fire Festival<\/a>, which will transform the square and gardens around Rochdale<\/a> Town Hall.<\/p>\n

The event has now been extended to include beautifully restored pathways and parkland on Broadfield Slopes plus the rink and a Christmas market.<\/p>\n

There’ll be three free night-time shows running 5pm to 8pm on November 21 to 23, promising ‘a magical trail of fire and lights’ and expecting bigger crowds than ever.<\/p>\n

Fiery displays, blazing sculptures and illuminated installations created by artists and pyro technicians from multi-award-winning outdoor arts specialists Walk the Plank will be open to walk through each evening, with the Christmas lights switch-on taking place at 5.30pm on the final night of Sunday, November 23.<\/p>\n

Tickets for the rink – which will be outdoor but covered – cost \u00a39.50 for children and \u00a313.50 for teenagers and adults. Sessions last 45 minutes.<\/p>\n

Children under 13 must be accompanied by an adult on the ice and one adult can supervise up to five children.<\/p>\n

Fox returns with his host of wild and wonderful friends, alongside a mystery guest. Families are invited to join in with the theatrical fun as Animal Crackers takes you on a self-guided journey of ‘mischievous merrymaking’ through the house.<\/p>\n
