It\u2019s a complicated time for PlayStation fans.<\/p>\n

This week saw the announcement of Ratchet & Clank: Ranger Rumble<\/strong><\/a> and Horizon Steel Frontiers<\/a>, two flagship first-party Sony titles which won\u2019t be available on the PS5.<\/p>\n

There\u2019s context that\u2019s getting lost in the social media overreaction, of course: PlayStation has wanted to explore mobile for ages, and its ultimate aim with these projects is to expand the brands.<\/p>\n

You could say the same about its decision to release flagship first-party games likes Ghost of Tsushima<\/a> and The Last of Us: Part 2<\/a> on the PC, but fresh speculation from Windows Central<\/strong><\/a> reporter Jez Corden claims the company may be scaling back that strategy.<\/p>\n

Now, while in the original quote \u2013 spotted by Reddit<\/a> after a podcast appearance<\/a> \u2013 the commentator says he got word from a \u201cvery good source\u201d, he\u2019s since clarified on X<\/a> (or Twitter<\/a>) that the rumours are \u201cvery vague\u201d. So, make of that what you will.<\/p>\n

just want to add that these were very vague rumors and just podcast discussions and speculations, not a serious report or leak! <\/p>\n

it’s my personal opinion that it would be good for sony to do day and date speaking purely mathematically, but a few people saw me say that and told\u2026<\/p>\n

But as part of a meandering discussion about the Japanese giant, Corden claims his supposed contact told him that PlayStation is \u201cprobably pulling back from PC\u201d.<\/p>\n

This is all in the aftermath of discoveries made on the PS5 operating system last week, where fans datamined a \u201cCross-Buy\u201d icon, potentially pointing to some kind of launcher<\/a> for PlayStation games on PC.<\/p>\n

Corden has since clarified that this is \u201cnot a serious report or leak\u201d, and the insinuation is that this would only apply to single player games should it actually be true anyway.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n

We do know that Sony recently removed \u201cgame revenue from beyond console\u201d from its list of strategic indicators<\/a>, suggesting releasing its software outside of the PlayStation ecosystem isn\u2019t a big priority anymore.<\/p>\n

But we already know off-console sales are effectively a footnote for PlayStation\u2019s business.<\/p>\n

In its most recent quarterly report<\/a>, multiformat game sales accounted for approximately 2% of the division\u2019s overall income, and that includes over a month of Helldivers 2<\/a> on Xbox as well.<\/p>\n

Personally, we don\u2019t think there\u2019s much to this story really.<\/p>\n

We imagine Sony will continue on the path it\u2019s been on for a while, porting the odd title here and there and supporting its live service efforts on formats where they make sense.<\/p>\n
