Just days after shocking fans with the news<\/a> that Pat Evans<\/a> (Pam St Clement<\/a>) is set to return, EastEnders has confirmed yet another epic comeback, with stepson Barry (Shaun Williamson<\/a>) set to follow. <\/p>\n Despite it being 21 years since he was last on our screens, unlucky-in-love Barry remains one of the BBC One soap\u2019s most iconic characters to ever set food in Walford. <\/p>\n His run of bad luck when it came to romance, coupled with his feud with stepmum Pat \u2013 who he blamed for the death of his beloved dad Roy (Tony Caunter)<\/a> \u2013 created countless TV moments that still live rent-free in our heads two decades on. <\/p>\n And of course, his exit scenes are among some of EastEnders\u2019 most remembered, with the popular character falling to his death on New Year\u2019s Day 2004 after a row with wife Janine Butcher <\/a>(Charlie Brooks). <\/p>\n Janine, in typical Janine fashion, did little to assist him in the moments after his tumble, which ultimately led to his demise. <\/p>\n In the scenes that followed, the schemer implied that he might\u2019ve still been alive if he\u2019d worn \u2018slip-on shoes\u2019. <\/p>\n \t\t Two decades later and Barry will stage an almighty comeback as part of Nigel Bates<\/a>\u2019 (Paul Bradley<\/a>) dementia storyline. <\/p>\n EastEnders is working with Dementia UK to ensure the narrative is told as accurately as possible. <\/p>\n As confirmed earlier this week, a special episode of the BBC One soap \u2013 which will focus on the story in question \u2013 sees Nigel\u2019s memories and altered reality take him back to the 1990s.<\/p>\n Pat, who was controversially killed off in 2012, returns to The Queen Vic <\/a>to help him when his dementia symptoms intensify following an emotional evening at his festive film screening.<\/p>\n But she\u2019s not alone. <\/p>\n \t\t Barry will appear alongside stepmum Pat when Nigel\u2019s dementia symptoms intensify and, although their relationship was fraught in the land of the living, the duo put aside their differences to help Nigel.<\/p>\n \u2018It was a complete shock getting the call to go back to Albert Square, but so exciting!,\u2019 actor Shaun said on reprising his legendary role.<\/p>\n \t\t\t\tCan’t wait for the next twist?\t\t\t<\/p>\n Hi, I\u2019m Stephen Patterson, Metro\u2019s deputy soaps editor.<\/strong><\/p>\n If you want to stay up to date on the latest spoilers from Hollyoaks, EastEnders, Emmerdale, Corrie and more, sign up to\u00a0our daily Soaps Newsletter<\/a>.<\/p>\n \t\t From the big moments to the gossip you can\u2019t miss, it\u2019s all in your inbox every morning.\u00a0Sign up now<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n \u2018I have to admit to a few nerves (loads!) when I walked back onto the set of The Queen Victoria, but it was so great to work with old friends and colleagues on such a brilliant episode. <\/p>\n \u2018Just goes to show, you never know what\u2019s around the corner!\u2019<\/p>\n \t\t Ben Wadey<\/a>, EastEnders\u2019 Executive Producer. added:<\/strong>\u00a0\u2018I\u2019m delighted to welcome Shaun Williamson back to EastEnders for Nigel\u2019s special episode. <\/p>\n \u2018Barry Evans was renowned for being one of Walford\u2019s unluckiest residents, most notably for his choice of shoes, and so it was a privilege to welcome him back alongside Pat for these special scenes in The Vic.\u2019<\/p>\n And if that wasn\u2019t enough reason to get excited about the festive season in Walford, Sam Mitchell will also be returning to the Square<\/a> this December, with star Kim Medcalf<\/a> \u2013 who was last seen in 2024 \u2013 reprising her iconic role. <\/p>\n \u2018It\u2019s such a joy to be asked to come back to EastEnders, especially as it\u2019s the festive period and you know there will always be plenty of fireworks,\u2019 Kim was quoted.\u00a0<\/p>\n \u2018I love the character of Sam, she always causes drama wherever she goes, but she also has that vulnerable side too, which is great to play.
