We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.<\/p>\n<p><strong class=\"sc-1uza6dc-1 cglitp\">Your support makes all the difference.<\/strong>Read more<\/p>\n<p>The United States is still not ready for a female president after more than <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.britannica.com\/story\/who-was-the-first-woman-to-run-for-president-of-the-united-states\">a century of unsuccessful campaigns<\/a> for the White House, according to former First Lady <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/topic\/michelle-obama\">Michelle Obama<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs we saw in this past election, sadly, we ain\u2019t ready,\u201d Obama <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/qnVS1MlDb8Y?t=1954\">said<\/a> earlier this month in a live conversation with actor Tracee Ellis Ross that was published Friday.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s why I\u2019m like, don\u2019t even look at me about running, because you all are lying,\u201d she said. \u201cYou\u2019re not ready for a woman. You are not. So don\u2019t waste my time.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ross asked the former first lady whether she felt her role impacted \u201cthe room that we\u2019ve made for a woman to be president.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Obama \u2014 who is routinely the subject of speculation over whether she will make her own run for the presidency \u2014 said the country has \u201cgot a lot of growing up to do, and there\u2019s still, sadly, a lot of men who do not feel like they can be led by a woman, and we saw it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" president (Getty)<\/p>\n<p>Vice President Kamala Harris, the first woman to ever hold the role, lost the 2024 presidential election to Donald Trump in part because of changing gender dynamics in the vote. <\/p>\n<p>Trump won a majority of men under age 50 in 2024, a shift from when former President Joe Biden captured that same group in 2020, <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.pewresearch.org\/politics\/2025\/06\/26\/voting-patterns-in-the-2024-election\/\">according to Pew Research<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p>Overall, 55 percent of male voters backed Trump in 2024, up from 50 percent the previous election. <\/p>\n<p>A recent <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/news\/world\/americas\/us-politics\/president-woman-poll-young-voters-b2841066.html\">poll<\/a> found that while large majorities of voters think it\u2019s important to elect more women to high political office, there\u2019s still considerable wariness about a female president.<\/p>\n<p>Nearly one in five voters told an American University survey they or someone they know would not vote for a woman as president, including one-quarter of women under 50 and nearly 20 percent of men under 50. <\/p>\n<p>Beyond just the presidential vote, gender-related issues have played a large part in the Trump administration\u2019s agenda so far.<\/p>\n<p>The Trump administration has <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/news\/world\/americas\/us-politics\/trump-transgender-nonbinary-passports-supreme-court-b2860319.html\">blocked gender-inclusive passports<\/a>, <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/news\/district-of-columbia-keith-ellison-trump-health-and-human-services-department-portland-b2853993.html\">attempted to pull funding<\/a> for sexual education mentioning gender diversity, restricted gender-affirming medical care, and <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/news\/minnesota-donald-trump-department-of-health-and-human-services-nordic-denver-b2836940.html\">punished schools<\/a> for allowing transgender athletes to
