{"id":574209,"date":"2025-11-16T13:41:18","date_gmt":"2025-11-16T13:41:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/574209\/"},"modified":"2025-11-16T13:41:18","modified_gmt":"2025-11-16T13:41:18","slug":"j-kidman-architecture-creates-monolithic-temple-house-in-melbourne","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/574209\/","title":{"rendered":"J Kidman Architecture creates monolithic Temple House in Melbourne"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Frameless expanses of glazing break up the monolithic, angular volumes of Temple House, a family <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/tag\/houses\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">home<\/a> in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/tag\/Australia\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Australia<\/a> designed by local studio J Kidman Architecture with interior design practices Golden and Studio Tali Roth.<\/p>\n<p>Named Temple House, the single-storey home was designed by <a href=\"http:\/\/jkidman.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">J Kidman Architecture<\/a> for a family of five on a deep and narrow plot in the Melbourne suburb of Hawthorn.<\/p>\n<p>Its plan is organised around two garden courtyards that help maximise light on this linear plot, giving rise to an almost symmetrical layout.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-2269509\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/temple-house-j-kidman-architecture-golden-studio-tali-roth-australia-fennessy_dezeen_2364_col_0-852x.jpeg\" alt=\"Temple House by J Kidman Architecture\" width=\"2364\" height=\"1486\"  \/>J Kidman Architecture has completed Temple House. Photo by Sean Fennessy<\/p>\n<p>J Kidman Architecture&#8217;s founder James Reid compared this plan to that of a basilica or place of worship, which informed the name Temple House as well as the design of the &#8220;quiet but powerful forms&#8221; that form the home.<\/p>\n<p>The idea of a temple also influenced the home&#8217;s interiors and details, including <a href=\"https:\/\/designbygolden.com.au\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Golden<\/a>&#8216;s designs for the bathrooms that were recently shortlisted in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/awards\/2025\/shortlists\/categories\/interiors\/bathroom-interior\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">bathroom interior<\/a> category of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/awards\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Dezeen Awards 2025<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2269546 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/temple-house-j-kidman-architecture-golden-studio-tali-roth-australia-kaye_dezeen_2364_col_40-852x127.jpeg\" alt=\"Monolithic home in Melbourne\" width=\"1577\" height=\"2364\"  \/>The home is made up of monolithic volumes<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Equivalent conditions to the atrium, narthex, aisles, and nave of a cathedral or basilica, all in strong axial relationships, with a strong sense of ceremony and formality, the plan was really a kind of remixed basilica,&#8221; said Reid.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;So we followed that cue and leaned into the idea of a domestic temple for the form of the building, imagining a building of quiet but powerful forms that invited contemplation,&#8221; he added.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-2269524\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/temple-house-j-kidman-architecture-golden-studio-tali-roth-australia-fennessy_dezeen_2364_col_19-852.jpeg\" alt=\"Temple House by J Kidman Architecture\" width=\"2364\" height=\"1577\"  \/>The plan is organised around two courtyards. Photo by Sean Fennessy<\/p>\n<p>Entering the site via a side passage alongside a garage reveals a monolithic section of curved wall clad in ribbed limestone tiles, behind which sits an entry hall with large apertures in its corners revealing the spaces beyond.<\/p>\n<p>Crossing a long corridor that creates an axis through the entire site leads to a double-height living, dining and kitchen area to the east.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2269539 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/temple-house-j-kidman-architecture-golden-studio-tali-roth-australia-kaye_dezeen_2364_col_16-852x127.jpeg\" alt=\"Double-height living room\" width=\"1577\" height=\"2364\"  \/>The interiors were designed with Golden and Studio Tali Roth<\/p>\n<p>The living area sits beneath a large trapezoid-shaped roof and overlooks two courtyards to the north and south through sliding glass doors and large expanses of frameless glazing, which extend upwards to create a &#8220;lantern&#8221; in each corner.<\/p>\n<p>With landscaping designed by Plume Studio, the northern courtyard ends in a geometric swimming pool accessed by crossing a small moat. To the south, the main bedroom overlooks perimeter planting and bench seating through a large, arched opening.<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/2024\/08\/14\/state-of-kin-proclamation-house-hemp\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><br \/>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"191\" height=\"191\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/proclamation-house-state-of-kin-architecture-residential-australia-hemp-render_dezeen_1704_sq-191x19.jpeg\" class=\"excludeLightbox wp-post-image\" alt=\"Proclamation House by State of Kin\" decoding=\"async\" data-pin-nopin=\"true\"  \/><\/p>\n<p> State of Kin uses hemp render to create family home with &#8220;organic feel&#8221;\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Central sections of stone wall on either side support the overhang of the home&#8217;s large roof, dividing the garden areas into areas of seating and planting with steel columns and canopies designed to support climbing plants.<\/p>\n<p>Externally, the geometric forms of the home have all been finished with pale, bagged masonry to give them a subtly textured appearance.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2269540 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/temple-house-j-kidman-architecture-golden-studio-tali-roth-australia-kaye_dezeen_2364_col_21-852x127.jpeg\" alt=\"Temple House by J Kidman Architecture\" width=\"1577\" height=\"2364\"  \/>The living space features a green marble kitchen<\/p>\n<p>Interior design practices Golden and <a href=\"https:\/\/studiotaliroth.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Studio Tali Roth<\/a> centred the living space around a green marble kitchen, which is flanked by a dark green modular sofa and a stainless steel dining table for up to 12 people.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The brutalist nature of the chosen materials \u2013 stone, pale wood and metals \u2013 and the ceiling heights could call for a hostile and not inviting space,&#8221;
