(Image: Getty)<\/p>\n<p>This gorgeous little town, made up of winding streets and historic buildings, is often voted the prettiest in the UK and has a truly vibrant, bustling high street that feels like it&#8217;s frozen in time.<\/p>\n<p>Despite being a very small town, with most of its shops and eateries dotted along the main high street, it does, according to the town council&#8217;s website, which helpfully lists them all, boast 60 independent shops.<\/p>\n<p>From independent <a data-link-tracking=\"InArticle|Link\" title=\"The pretty little UK town that&#039;s a paradise for book lovers\" href=\"https:\/\/www.express.co.uk\/news\/uk\/2083284\/cute-little-uk-book-town\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">book shops<\/a> to gift shops, <a data-link-tracking=\"InArticle|Link\" title=\"The traditional and ancient British skills in danger of being lost forever\" href=\"https:\/\/www.express.co.uk\/news\/uk\/2132980\/traditional-ancient-british-skills-danger\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">crafts<\/a>, old-fashioned sweets, fashion, jewellery, interiors and florists, not to mention an abundance of quirky tea rooms,<a data-link-tracking=\"InArticle|Link\" title=\"The surprising coffee capital of the UK where 8 out of 10 cafes are independent\" href=\"https:\/\/www.express.co.uk\/news\/uk\/2080723\/surprising-coffee-capital-uk-where\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> coffee shops<\/a>, bars and restaurants, this quaint little corner of middle England has it all.<\/p>\n<p>From a shopping perspective, it is primarily made up of one street, but don\u2019t be fooled into thinking there won\u2019t be much to see because this small town definitely packs a punch when it comes to browsing the shops. Considering how much the\u00a0<a data-link-tracking=\"InArticle|Link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.express.co.uk\/news\/uk\/2046502\/80m-mega-project-more-tourists-uk-shopping-street\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">High Street<\/a>s in England are generally on the decline, there is little evidence of this here, with a great variety of independent shops to choose from.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"withoutCaption\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/shops-along-the-hill-burford-6551619.jpg\" class=\"zoomEnabled\" data-img=\"https:\/\/cdn.images.express.co.uk\/img\/dynamic\/1\/1200x712\/secondary\/shops-along-the-hill-burford-6551619.jpg?r=1763126166306\" alt=\"Shops along The Hill, Burford.\" title=\"Shops along The Hill, Burford.\" width=\"590\" height=\"393\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Independent shops line the hill through the centre of Burford. The <a data-link-tracking=\"InArticle|Link\" title=\"The beautiful English county as pretty as the Cotswolds but so much cheaper\" href=\"https:\/\/www.express.co.uk\/news\/uk\/2073239\/beautiful-english-county-pretty-cotswolds\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Cotswolds<\/a> cover 800 square miles and is the largest Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty ( AONB) in England and Wales. Burford sits at the Eastern edge of this area and is quintessentially Cotswold with beautiful honey coloured houses, dating back to the mid-Saxon period, between the 5th and 11th centuries.<\/p>\n<p data-mce-linkchecker-status=\"valid\">Tina, a blogger who writes <a data-link-tracking=\"InArticle|Link\" href=\"https:\/\/amidlifeadventure.org\/2024\/04\/08\/the-cotswolds-shopping-in-burford\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">amidlifeadventure.org<\/a> admits she fell in love with\u00a0<a data-link-tracking=\"InArticle|Link\" title=\"Picturesque Cotswolds town home to UK&#039;s most romantic hotel\" href=\"https:\/\/www.express.co.uk\/travel\/articles\/2027179\/cotswolds-town-beautiful-romantic-hotel-holiday\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> Burford,<\/a> whose town council list 60 independent shops and businesses, mostly long the main drag of the town.<\/p>\n<p>She writes: &#8220;We began our explorations at the La Bulle. This beautifully laid out <a data-link-tracking=\"InArticle|Link\" title=\"Heritage brand loved by Claudia Winkleman and Princess Kate launches sale\" href=\"https:\/\/www.express.co.uk\/life-style\/style\/2132556\/heritage-brand-loved-claudia-winkleman\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">fashion<\/a> accessories shop specialises in Italian leather bags at affordable prices and that wonderful fresh leather smell greets you as soon as you walk through the door.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Between shopping, she advises: &#8220;Keep your eyes peeled as you wander down the High Street, as there are a few small alleyways that meander away from the Main Street that are worth exploring architecturally.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>She goes on: &#8220;Our next stop was instead The Madhatter Bookshop. The Madhatter arrived in Burford some twenty-plus years ago. It\u2019s not huge but don\u2019t be afraid to chat to the Assistant because even if they don\u2019t have what you might be looking for or maybe don\u2019t know what you want and need some help or guidance, they have a wealth of experience and are more than happy to help including ordering a book and having it delivered to your home address.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Additionally they hold Book\/Bar evenings and a virtual \u201cBook Club\u201d that you can join wherever you are in the world.&#8221; The owner Kim is also the founder of the September <a data-link-tracking=\"InArticle|Link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.burfordlitfest.co.uk\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Burford Literary Festival<\/a> which delivers a range of chats and talks.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"withoutCaption\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/picturesque-burford-high-street-in-the-cotswolds-during-autumn-6551634.jpg\" class=\"zoomEnabled\" data-img=\"https:\/\/cdn.images.express.co.uk\/img\/dynamic\/1\/1200x712\/secondary\/picturesque-burford-high-street-in-the-cotswolds-during-autumn-6551634.jpg?r=1763126166322\" alt=\"Picturesque Burford high street in  autumn\" title=\"Picturesque Burford high street in  autumn\" width=\"590\" height=\"393\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p>The picturesque Cotswolds town looks stunning in Autumn and is quieter too. (Image: Getty)<\/p>\n<p>Tina recommended\u00a0\u00a0Huffkins as a great place to stop for some refreshment.\u00a0 &#8220;This Cotswold tearoom is well worth a visit if you are looking to have elevenses, lunch or afternoon tea whilst visiting.\u00a0It\u2019s been here since 1890 and has developed across time, producing such pleasurable\u00a0<a data-link-tracking=\"InArticle|Link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.express.co.uk\/life-style\/food\/2069499\/great-british-cake-off-hyper\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">cakes<\/a> and sandwiches, and the business has expanded to encompass another eight tea rooms, including locations in London.\u00a0:<\/p>\n<p>Craft &amp; Curious is a pottery painting studio offering handmade, hand-painted, and personalised pottery keepsakes and homeware, whilst also selling anything Christmassy all year round! If you like to spend time doing something \u201ccrafty\u201d whilst away for a couple of days, it\u2019s worth giving them a call in advance as you can paint your own pottery and they also run \u201cPaint and <a data-link-tracking=\"InArticle|Link\" title=\"It&#039;s the new Prosecco - but so much nicer and without the hefty Champagne price\" href=\"https:\/\/www.express.co.uk\/life-style\/life\/2019511\/its-new-prosecco\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Prosecco<\/a>\u201d evenings.<\/p>\n<p>Tucked away in the corner of this alleyway is also \u201cNutmeg &amp; Thyme,\u201d a 100% gluten-free and vegan cafe, which we will no doubt try on a future visit.<\/p>\n<p>Just past this alleyway is Burford\u2019s Traditional Sweet Shop&#8221;,\u00a0 a \u201csweety wonderland\u201d, with over 200 varieties to choose from alongside local handmade chocolates and gifts.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Other High Street favourites include the famous Burford Garden Company, artisan foods at The Cotswold Cheese Company and fashion boutiques like Slate Clothing, specialist antiques with Manfred Schotten and home goods at Just Fabrics.<\/p>\n<p>A spokesperson for Burford Town Council said: &#8220;Burford is blessed with some of the more individual shops in the Cotswolds and most are open seven days a week. Burford has good transport links and parking.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Burford is served by two <a data-link-tracking=\"InArticle|Link\" title=\"The &#039;new&#039; 126-mile riverside train ride linking two of Europe&#039;s best countries\" href=\"https:\/\/www.express.co.uk\/travel\/articles\/2130148\/incredible-new-126-mile-riverside\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">railway<\/a> stations on the Worcester\/Hereford to London <a data-link-tracking=\"InArticle|Link\" title=\"Paddington\u2019s &#039;biggest fan&#039; has a collection of bears worth \u00a320,000\" href=\"https:\/\/www.express.co.uk\/news\/uk\/1970750\/paddingtons-biggest-fan-collection-bears-worth-20-000\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Paddington<\/a> Line. Charlbury Station is approximately 7 miles from Burford, and most of the services stop there. Shipton-under-Wychwood Station is approximately 5 miles from Burford and has a limited service.<\/p>\n<p>Parking in Burford is free \u2013 both on the street and in the public car park. Parking on the East side of the High Street is limited to 2 hours. There is no time restriction on the West side of the high street. There is a 12-hour limit in the main car park.
