He called on EU negotiators to sort out the issue during interinstitutional talks on the broader legislation, which is related to the EU&#8217;s common agricultural market.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe hope it could be clarified &#8230; that it refers exclusively to meat products, without negatively affecting or excluding traditional seafood packaging in other sectors,\u201d he said. \u201cAttention must be given to ensuring the linguistic consistency across all EU languages.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>French MEP C\u00e9line Imart, who proposed European Parliament&#8217;s ban, did not respond to requests for comment.<\/p>\n<p>A separate proposal from the European Commission bans more specific terms, like &#8220;wing&#8221; and &#8220;drumstick.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"761\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/GettyImages-1258713768-1024x761.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-7504440\"  \/>In Spanish, for example, the translated term for &#8220;steak&#8221; \u2014 a word the ban says can only apply to meat products \u2014 is &#8220;filete,&#8221; often used for cuts of fish. | Richard Lautens\/Getty Images<\/p>\n<p>Even in English, some of these \u201cmeaty\u201d terms cross sectors. After all, anglophones eat &#8220;tuna steaks,&#8221; too. Will Nestl\u00e9 have to update its famous Drumstick ice cream cones? (Unclear.) Will McDonald\u2019s need to rename the Filet-O-Fish?
