{"id":57595,"date":"2025-04-28T13:51:10","date_gmt":"2025-04-28T13:51:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/57595\/"},"modified":"2025-04-28T13:51:10","modified_gmt":"2025-04-28T13:51:10","slug":"germanys-merz-appoints-mediamarkt-chief-as-new-digital-minister","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/57595\/","title":{"rendered":"Germany\u2019s Merz appoints MediaMarkt chief as new digital minister"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"c-ad__placeholder__logo\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/logo-euronews-grey-6-180x22.svg.svg+xml\" width=\"180\" height=\"22\" alt=\"\" loading=\"lazy\"\/>ADVERTISEMENT<\/p>\n<p>Karsten Wildberger, currently CEO of Ceconomy AG &#8211; the parent company of consumer electronic companies MediaMarkt and Saturn &#8211; was nominated on Monday as Germany\u2019s first ever digital minister by the incoming coalition government of Chancellor Friedrich Merz.<\/p>\n<p>Wildberger\u2019s appointment came\u00a0as a surprise as he lacks political experience, though as chairman of MediaMarktSaturn\u00a0Group he has led an enterprise spanning 1,000 consumer electronics stores in eleven countries.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/icon-cross-10x10-grey-6.svg.svg+xml\" width=\"10\" height=\"10\" alt=\"Close advertising\" fetchpriority=\"high\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p>He has previously worked for Boston Consulting Group and had leading roles at Australian telecom company Telstra and German energy company E-ON.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI am honoured by the trust that Friedrich Merz has placed in me and by the opportunity to become the new Minister for Digital Affairs. Digitalization and technology have been defining themes throughout my career, and the new ministry will play a decisive role in the modernization of our country,\u201d Wildberger said in a <a href=\"https:\/\/eur03.safelinks.protection.outlook.com\/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.ceconomy.de%2Fmedia%2Fceconomy_press_release_ceconomy_ceo_dr._karsten_wildberger_accepts_responsible_ministerial_position_in_new_federal_cabinet_in_germany.pdf&amp;data=05%7C02%7Ccynthia.kroet%40euronews.com%7Cd4604c8a01ed463dde9a08dd86589b88%7Ce59fa28a32ed49aca5a09c46118cfecf%7C0%7C0%7C638814437303382148%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJFbXB0eU1hcGkiOnRydWUsIlYiOiIwLjAuMDAwMCIsIlAiOiJXaW4zMiIsIkFOIjoiTWFpbCIsIldUIjoyfQ%3D%3D%7C0%7C%7C%7C&amp;sdata=LLaSWfe421DwcfHYPvt8lqZP798abAKdVtzp%2FMkP9uM%3D&amp;reserved=0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">statement <\/a>published by Ceconomy.<\/p>\n<p>Wildberger asked the Supervisory Board to release him from his duties as of May 5, 2025, in order to assume his ministerial position.<\/p>\n<p>Merz\u2019s centre-right Christian Democratic Union (CDU) has previously called for a ministry for digitisation to be created distinct from the Ministry of Transport, which currently handles digital issues.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The party\u2019s election <a href=\"https:\/\/www.euronews.com\/next\/2025\/02\/24\/german-centre-right-win-heralds-likely-digital-ministry\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">manifesto <\/a>\u2014 which was announced in mid-December \u2014 said that while \u201cfuture technologies need freedom, the state needs clear responsibilities&#8221;.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/eur03.safelinks.protection.outlook.com\/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.euronews.com%2Fnext%2F2025%2F02%2F24%2Fgerman-centre-right-win-heralds-likely-digital-ministry&amp;data=05%7C02%7Ccynthia.kroet%40euronews.com%7Cd4604c8a01ed463dde9a08dd86589b88%7Ce59fa28a32ed49aca5a09c46118cfecf%7C0%7C0%7C638814437303405524%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJFbXB0eU1hcGkiOnRydWUsIlYiOiIwLjAuMDAwMCIsIlAiOiJXaW4zMiIsIkFOIjoiTWFpbCIsIldUIjoyfQ%3D%3D%7C0%7C%7C%7C&amp;sdata=UVc45o5CKQFayPkC%2BDCoHmbLDNYistQhJ1lU9HV4seA%3D&amp;reserved=0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">\u00a0<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Bitkom, a German digital industry association, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bitkom.org\/Presse\/Presseinformation\/Bitkom-neuer-Digitalminister\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">said <\/a>Wildberger has a core task of making Germany a \u201cdigitally sovereign country \u2013 in the economy, state and society\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe establishment of the new department is a milestone for Germany and its design will be decisive in determining whether it becomes a real driver of digitization in Germany. Now more than ever, we need to become competitive, innovative and digitally capable of acting: to get the economy going, strengthen social cohesion, improve security in cyberspace and bring the state up to date,\u201d the statement said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Seven <a href=\"https:\/\/www.euronews.com\/my-europe\/2025\/04\/28\/germanys-incoming-chancellor-friedrich-merz-announces-cabinet-posts\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">ministries <\/a>will go to the CDU within the new coalition, seven to the centre-left Social Democrats (SPD) and three to the Bavarian sister party of CDU, CSU. The new government will take office on 5 May.
