An investigation has been launched following the death of a man in GMP custody. Graham Beaumont ‘lost consciousness’ in a police van on the way to a station.<\/p>\n
The Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) has launched a probe into the death of 41-year-old.<\/p>\n
Mr Beaumont ‘died in hospital after falling ill while in the custody of Greater Manchester Police’ following being arrested on the evening of October 31, the office confirmed.<\/p>\n
He was arrested after ‘the vehicle he was travelling in was stopped by officers’.<\/p>\n
Join the Manchester Evening News <\/strong>WhatsApp<\/strong> group <\/strong>HERE<\/a><\/p>\n The 41-year-old ‘lost consciousness while being transported in a police van’ on his way to Swinton Police Station, and was instead taken to Salford<\/a> Royal Hospital.<\/p>\n Despite ’emergency first aid’, Mr Beaumont died at the hospital hours later, the IOPC has said this afternoon (November 17).<\/p>\n An IOPC spokesperson told the Manchester Evening News: “The Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) is investigating following the death of man who died in hospital after falling ill while in the custody of Greater Manchester Police (GMP).<\/p>\n “Graham Beaumont, 41, lost consciousness while being transported in a police van on Friday, October 31. He was instead taken to Salford<\/a> Royal Hospital, where he sadly died later that day.”<\/p>\n IOPC Director Amanda Rowe added: \u201cOur thoughts are with Mr Beaumont\u2019s family, loved ones and all those affected at this difficult time. When someone dies in police custody, it is important that we carry out an independent investigation and examine all the circumstances surrounding their death.<\/p>\n \u201cWe have been in touch with Mr Beaumont\u2019s family and will ensure they are kept informed as our investigation progresses. Our findings will be shared with the coroner in due course.\u201d<\/p>\n The IOPC says it has established that Mr Beaumont was arrested shortly after 8pm on October 31, after the vehicle he was travelling in was stopped by officers.<\/p>\n
