{"id":576324,"date":"2025-11-17T14:45:30","date_gmt":"2025-11-17T14:45:30","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/576324\/"},"modified":"2025-11-17T14:45:30","modified_gmt":"2025-11-17T14:45:30","slug":"us-tops-1-1-million-international-students-as-opt-fuels-growth","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/576324\/","title":{"rendered":"US tops 1.1 million international students as OPT fuels growth"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>IIE\u2019s newly released <a href=\"https:\/\/opendoorsdata.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Open Doors<\/a> report for academic year 2024\/25 has revealed another year of growth for America\u2019s international student population, surpassing 1.1 million, including OPT participants.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis data highlights the impact international students have in driving innovation, advancing scholarship, and strengthening cross cultural understanding,\u201d said IIE president Jason Czyz, highlighting their contributions to US colleges and communities.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The data revealed international undergraduate enrolment grew by 4% \u2013 the first significant increase at that level since the pandemic \u2013 while graduate student numbers dipped by 3% and non-degree students fell by a similar amount. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"576\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml,%3Csvg%20xmlns=\" http:=\"\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-261874\" data-lazy- data-lazy- data-lazy-src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/OD25_Infographics_International-Students-Trendline-1024x576.png\"\/>Source: IIE<\/p>\n<p>The overall 5% growth was primarily driven by OPT participation, which saw a continued increase of 21% \u2013 just below last year\u2019s growth rate and largely driven by Indian students whose OPT participation rose by 47% on the previous year. According to IIE, just under half (49%) of students on the OPT workstream hail from India.<\/p>\n<p>Amid growing calls for OPT to be separated from official international student counts, Open Doors data includes the workstream \u201cbecause it is an essential component of an international student\u2019s academic experience,\u201d said IIE\u2019s head of research Mirka Martel, unveiling the report. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is supported by their college or university, and it provides an opportunity for students to gain practical work experience in their field of study,\u201d she continued. <\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"576\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml,%3Csvg%20xmlns=\" http:=\"\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-261877\" data-lazy- data-lazy- data-lazy-src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/OD25_Infographics_International-Students-Academic-Levels-1024x576.png\"\/>Source: IIE<\/p>\n<p>The data showed the number of international students enrolling at a US institution for the first time in fall 2024 decreased by 7%. This varied by academic level, with new undergraduates rising by 5%, while the number of new graduates fell by 15%.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, IIE\u2019s fall 2025 <a href=\"https:\/\/thepienews.com\/new-international-enrolments-in-us-down-17-this-fall\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">snapshot data<\/a> also released today, showed new international enrolments for this semester down by 17% \u2013 reflecting sector concerns about the impact of current visa restrictions and policy challenges on students coming to US campuses. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The 2024\/25 data, representing a period before Donald Trump\u2019s second administration, saw India retain its top position as America\u2019s largest sending country for the second year in a row, with 49% of Indian students on graduate programs and 40% participating in OPT.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>However, the data suggests the Indian graduate student boom may have passed its peak, with graduate student numbers falling by 10% compared to undergraduate enrolments that grew by 11%. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"576\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml,%3Csvg%20xmlns=\" http:=\"\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-261878\" data-lazy- data-lazy- data-lazy-src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/OD25_Infographics_International-Students-Countries-1024x576.png\"\/>Source: IIE<\/p>\n<p>While Indian students accounted for 31% of the total, Chinese students comprised 23%, followed by lesser proportions of students from South Korea, Canada, Vietnam and Nepal. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Even with their continued growth, international students made up just over 6% of America\u2019s total student population, with stakeholders emphasising their relatively small share as compared to the UK (27%), Australia (31%) and Canada (38%), according to <a href=\"https:\/\/iie.widen.net\/s\/mftxs8tqqc\/outlook-2030_expanding-intl-study_2025\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">IIE<\/a> figures. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>For the fourth year in a row, graduate students made up the largest group of international students in the US, as international doctoral student numbers reached their highest total in 2024\/25. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Notably, community colleges experienced the <a href=\"https:\/\/thepienews.com\/new-study-maps-internationalisation-efforts-in-us-community-colleges\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">largest rise<\/a> in international student levels (8%), in line with a recent study that found community colleges have been more active in international education than mainstream data has traditionally suggested.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The Open Doors data found more than half (57%) of all international students were studying in STEM fields last year, with math &amp;
