{"id":576616,"date":"2025-11-17T17:50:14","date_gmt":"2025-11-17T17:50:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/576616\/"},"modified":"2025-11-17T17:50:14","modified_gmt":"2025-11-17T17:50:14","slug":"eswatini-confirms-receiving-over-5m-from-us-to-accept-deportees-eswatini","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/576616\/","title":{"rendered":"Eswatini confirms receiving over $5m from US to accept deportees | Eswatini"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Eswatini has confirmed for the first time that it had received more than $5m from the United States to accept dozens of people expelled under Washington\u2019s aggressive mass deportation drive.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The tiny southern African kingdom has taken in 15 men since Donald Trump\u2019s administration struck largely secretive deals with at least five African nations to accept migrants under a third-country deportation programme fiercely criticised by rights groups.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">A document revealed by Human Rights Watch in September and seen by AFP said Eswatini agreed to take 160 deportees in exchange for $5.1 million to \u201cbuild its border and migration management capacity\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Questioned in parliament about the arrangement, Finance Minister Neal Rijkenberg confirmed the government had received the $5.1 million.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cWe were told it was for the US deportees after we enquired,\u201d he said, adding the ministry had been kept in the dark throughout the process.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/2025\/jul\/16\/trump-administration-deports-five-migrants-to-eswatini-in-southern-africa\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> first group of five men arrived in July<\/a> aboard a chartered US military plane, with a second batch <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2025\/oct\/06\/us-deportees-eswatini-lawyers-ngos\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">received in early October.<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Washington branded some of them \u201cdepraved monsters\u201d convicted of crimes including child rape and murder.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">They are being held without charge in Eswatini\u2019s maximum-security Matsapha correctional centre, notorious for detaining political prisoners, according to their lawyers.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">One of them, a 62-year-old Jamaican who had reportedly completed a murder sentence in the US, was sent back to Jamaica in September.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Lawyers and civil society groups in Eswatini have gone to court to challenge the legality of the detentions.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Rijkenberg told parliament the money received from the US was funnelled into the account of Eswatini\u2019s disaster agency, NDMA.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">However, \u201cNDMA is not allowed to use money it has not been appropriated,\u201d he said, vowing to regularise the process.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">It was not immediately clear who from Eswatini signed the deal with the United States.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Formerly known as Swaziland, the country is the last absolute monarchy in Africa.
