{"id":577754,"date":"2025-11-18T06:42:43","date_gmt":"2025-11-18T06:42:43","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/577754\/"},"modified":"2025-11-18T06:42:43","modified_gmt":"2025-11-18T06:42:43","slug":"starmer-and-von-der-leyen-agree-on-need-for-rapid-progress-on-brexit-reset-deal-4","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/577754\/","title":{"rendered":"Starmer and Von der Leyen agree on need for rapid progress on Brexit reset deal"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Prime Minister told the commission president that \u201cany deals must result in tangible benefits to the British public,\u201d according to a Downing Street read-out of their call on Wednesday evening.<\/p>\n<p>Ms Von der Leyen said work was ongoing to reach \u201ca mutually beneficial outcome\u201d on the defence scheme, and that the pair had agreed to start formal talks next week on food and drink and emissions trading deals.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"525\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Tonight I had a good call with <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Keir_Starmer?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">@Keir_Starmer<\/a>, during which we discussed progress made and reiterated our commitment to our renewed agenda.<\/p>\n<p>We have agreed to start negotiations on both the SPS and ETS agreements next week.<\/p>\n<p>And on UK participation in our SAFE instrument, we\u2026<\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Ursula von der Leyen (@vonderleyen) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/vonderleyen\/status\/1988728125266477273?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">November 12, 2025<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Negotiations are being held on how much the UK should pay to participate in the European Union\u2019s new 150 billion euro security action for Europe (Safe) rearmament fund.<\/p>\n<p>The defence and security partnership, announced as part of a wider UK-EU deal in May, will allow UK arms firms to bid for Safe loans.<\/p>\n<p>But it has been reported that the UK is resisting EU demands to pay billions of pounds to gain access to the scheme and wants to ensure any deal represents value for money.<\/p>\n<p>Sir Keir and Ms Von der Leyen \u201creaffirmed their commitment to moving forwards rapidly\u201d on introducing measures agreed at May\u2019s Brexit reset summit, the read-out said.<\/p>\n<p>A No 10 spokesman on Tuesday told reporters that \u201cnothing has been agreed\u201d and that \u201cwe will only agree deals that provide value to the UK and UK industry\u201d, but declined to give \u201crunning commentary\u201d on the talks.<\/p>\n<p>Following Sir Keir\u2019s Wednesday call with Ms Von der Leyen, a Downing Street spokesperson said: \u201cThe Prime Minister spoke to the President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen this evening.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey discussed the ongoing progress to implement the ambitious package agreed at the UK-EU Summit in May.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey reaffirmed their commitment to moving forwards rapidly, as it is in the UK and the EU\u2019s interests to have a broad and constructive relationship that delivers for both sides.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Prime Minister was clear that any deals must result in tangible benefits to the British public and strengthen wider European security.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey agreed to stay in close contact.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The leaders also agreed to launch talks on the permanent sanitary and phytosanitary standards (SPS) deal and an agreement on linking emissions trading systems.<\/p>\n<p>Ms Von der Leyen said on X: \u201cTonight I had a good call with @Keir_Starmer, during which we discussed progress made and reiterated our commitment to our renewed agenda.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have agreed to start negotiations on both the SPS and ETS agreements next week.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd on UK participation in our SAFE instrument, we continue the work together to achieve a mutually beneficial outcome.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI look forward to seeing the Prime Minister at the G20 next week.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Nick Thomas-Symonds, the EU relations minister, said: \u201cThis is welcome progress \u2013 we can now start formal talks on deals that will help keep food costs down and slash red tape.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are delivering on the commitments made to British businesses and the public at the historic UK-EU Summit in May.
