Work to redevelop a historic Edinburgh site into a major affordable housing<\/a> development is progressing rapidly.<\/p>\n

163 new homes are being built on the site of a former coal mine in Newcraighall<\/a> – between Glennie Road and the railway line – in the south-east of the city.<\/p>\n

Despite construction only starting 11 months ago, four apartment blocks and two rows of terraced houses have already taken shape.<\/p>\n

The first phase is expected to be ready for tenants<\/a> to move in to by next summer, consisting of 57 homes – 19 for social rent and 38 for mid-market rent.<\/p>\n

The project is predicted for completion by early 2029, and will ultimately be made up of a mix of property types, including two, three, and four-bedroom houses, two-up-two-down cottage flats, and apartment<\/a> blocks.<\/p>\n

Rich in industrial history, the site was once home to an active coal mine which ceased to operate in 1980, with the land lying empty ever since.<\/p>\n

However, alongside the new homes, a network of footpaths and thoroughfares will reconnect the area for the first time in nearly 200 years.<\/p>\n

John Alexander, chief executive of housing provider Hillcrest, said: \u201cWe\u2019re delighted to be making a positive contribution to Edinburgh\u2019s housing needs in addition to a welcome economic boost. With the construction sector having faced significant challenges over the past five years, we\u2019re delighted to see this major project progressing so well.<\/p>\n

Mark Beaton, director of contractor Cullross, added: \u201cWe have made excellent progress on site over the last 11 months, with over 60 units now wind and watertight. The weather has been kind, but this shouldn\u2019t take away from the great efforts of both our site team and supply chain who continue to deliver.\u201d<\/p>\n
