(<a href=\"http:\/\/www.yourcentralvalley.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">KSEE\/KGPE<\/a>) \u2013 Fresno County is considering banning a plant that people have been using as a medicinal herb for centuries.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dea.gov\/sites\/default\/files\/2020-06\/Kratom-2020_0.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">According to the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA)<\/a>, kratom leaves can be used to increase alertness and physical energy at low doses and as a sedative at higher doses. The National Institute (NIH) on Drug Abuse says people have also used them to <a href=\"https:\/\/nida.nih.gov\/research-topics\/kratom\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">manage drug withdrawal symptoms and cravings<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>While the leaves have been used in Southeast Asia for centuries, the DEA cautions that consumption can lead to addiction, and said that cases of psychosis have been reported after consuming the leaves.<\/p>\n<p>In August, <a href=\"https:\/\/ktla.com\/news\/local-news\/some-types-of-kratom-to-be-banned-in-orange-county\/?fbclid=IwY2xjawOIlQJleHRuA2FlbQIxMQBicmlkETFsSUh3ZEVrVzk5ZHo2UEdNc3J0YwZhcHBfaWQQMjIyMDM5MTc4ODIwMDg5MghjYWxsc2l0ZQIzMAABHl5rafFlZIczzyk6D7yv0ht_36WSewbtdN0gRp5RDJsXGKZtf29hnktO16Gd_aem_od9GIPAJzGZTsPOzkOoUiw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Orange County banned synthetic kratom<\/a>. <a href=\"http:\/\/publichealth.lacounty.gov\/phcommon\/public\/media\/mediapubhpdetail.cfm?prid=5179\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Los Angeles County<\/a> went a step further and completely banned the leaf after they saw six overdose\u00a0deaths tied to 7-OH ingestion (the psychoactive chemical\u00a0found in kratom).<\/p>\n<p>The leaf has also been banned in Newport Beach, Oceanside, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sandiego.gov\/sites\/default\/files\/guidetomerchants.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">San Diego<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Fresno County Supervisor Nathan Magsig, Fresno City Councilmember Nelson Esparza, and the Department of Public Health will discuss the proposed ordinance to regulate access to kratom during a joint press conference on Tuesday. The subject will again be discussed on Thursday during the county\u2019s board of supervisors meeting.<\/p>\n<p>While it is not controlled under the Controlled Substances Act, kratom is listed as a Drug and Chemical of Concern by the DEA.
