Two men have been arrested in connection with the attempted murder of Detective Chief Inspector John Caldwell.<\/p>\n
Mr Caldwell was off duty when he was shot several times at a sports complex after coaching a youth football team in Omagh, Co Tyrone.<\/p>\n
The New IRA has claimed responsibility for the attack which took place in February 2023.<\/p>\n
The PSNI has said: \u201cDetectives investigating the attempted murder of Detective Chief Inspector John Caldwell in Omagh in February 2023 have made two arrests.<\/p>\n
\u201cTwo men \u2013 aged 37 and 73 \u2013 were arrested in the Ardboe area and were detained under the Terrorism Act this evening, Tuesday, 18 November.\u201d<\/p>\n
They have been taken to Musgrave Serious Crime Suite for questioning.<\/p>\n
Mr Caldwell has since retired from the PSNI on medical grounds.<\/p>\n
A number of people have previously appeared in court charged with offences linked to the shooting attack.<\/p>\n
Mr Caldwell was awarded the King’s Police Medal is awarded for distinguished service in the police force.<\/p>\n
He was presented with the medal by the Princess Royal at Buckingham Palace in November 2024.<\/p>\n
