Michael McCaul, a top GOP foreign policy voice, responded \u201cI don\u2019t want to debate the president on that.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmi55jxiz00093b6n85nknl5n@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The former House Foreign Affairs Committee chair said he saw evidence in briefings at the time and was \u201cvery vocally opposed and still am\u201d to the killing, though he added, \u201cI do think it\u2019s time to move forward in this new Middle East that we\u2019re in.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmi55jxiz000a3b6n1uaox2hd@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Pressed on if the president should be essentially covering up for bin Salman, McCaul pointed to the president\u2019s plans to sell<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2025\/11\/18\/middleeast\/f35-trump-saudi-arabia-israel-latam-intl\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> F-35 jets <\/a>to Saudi Arabia.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmi55jxiz000b3b6nztwot70z@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cI think that\u2019s a positive move, because to pull Saudi as an ally of the United States in this direction, rather than to China, and it will also solidify normalization in that process, in a post Gaza world,\u201d he continued.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmi55jxiz000c3b6nqootfhmp@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            GOP Rep. Mike Lawler called Khashoggi\u2019s murder a \u201cterrible tragedy,\u201d and said, \u201cobviously there has been some level of accountability.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmi55jxiz000d3b6nck8dsttk@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cThat being said, he is the crown prince of Saudi Arabia,\u201d he continued. \u201cSaudi Arabia is a vital ally in the region, and a country that long term we need to deal with. He will be the king of Saudi Arabia, and so you have to engage moving forward.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmi55jxiz000e3b6n5gai2chj@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Pressed by Raju on Trump\u2019s dismissal of the Saudi government\u2019s role in Khashoggi\u2019s death, Lawler responded, \u201cI don\u2019t agree with that.
