{"id":580774,"date":"2025-11-19T16:42:18","date_gmt":"2025-11-19T16:42:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/580774\/"},"modified":"2025-11-19T16:42:18","modified_gmt":"2025-11-19T16:42:18","slug":"britain-pledges-to-support-yemen-to-ensure-freedom-in-red-sea","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/580774\/","title":{"rendered":"Britain pledges to support Yemen to ensure freedom in Red Sea"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 huqwQJ margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-0-UGD6I3DJPVFCFNWYQLXERG666Q\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thenationalnews.com\/tags\/uk-government\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.thenationalnews.com\/tags\/uk-government\/\">Britain<\/a> has vowed to support <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thenationalnews.com\/tags\/yemen\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.thenationalnews.com\/tags\/yemen\/\">Yemen&#8217;s<\/a> government against the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thenationalnews.com\/tags\/houthis\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.thenationalnews.com\/tags\/houthis\/\">Houthis<\/a> after the first visit to the country by a UK minister in six years. <\/p>\n<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 huqwQJ margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-1-GQUQT3O25FDGZEDJ3QMRQZM5AY\">Minister for the Middle East Hamish Falconer reaffirmed the UK&#8217;s backing for the official government\u2019s efforts to counter <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thenationalnews.com\/news\/mena\/2025\/11\/17\/yemen-government-says-houthi-linked-cell-seeking-to-destabilise-aden-arrested\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.thenationalnews.com\/news\/mena\/2025\/11\/17\/yemen-government-says-houthi-linked-cell-seeking-to-destabilise-aden-arrested\/\">extremists attacks<\/a> on shipping, saying it was \u201ccritical to strengthen maritime security\u201d, during his one-day visit to Aden on Wednesday. <\/p>\n<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 huqwQJ margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-3-LIJC6WDRFNEBJCP3TK6QSJRCK4\">Britain donated $4 million to the Yemen Coast Guard during a conference in Riyadh in September for new boats to tackle weapons smuggling and defend against piracy.<\/p>\n<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 huqwQJ margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-4-TA4D7IE66NEZLA4RPI2JJDZRWE\">During a trip to a coastguard outpost, Mr Falconer was told how the vessels will give greater protection to international shipping lanes and help ensure freedom of navigation in the Gulf of Aden and Red Sea. <\/p>\n<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 huqwQJ margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-6-J3W7U2OJLRAFNGQ3UZBU2QEJ34\">\u201cOur partnership with Yemen is critical to strengthen maritime security and to send a message to the Houthis: you\u2019re threatening the region and harming your countrymen,\u201d Mr Falconer said. <\/p>\n<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 huqwQJ margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-8-BFTN6CZ27ZBXZLB4E5JO6LWRVU\">The maritime outpost is on the front line of policing crime and piracy in the Gulf of Aden. It is equipped with new and refurbished interceptor and patrol vessels, funded by the UK. <\/p>\n<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 huqwQJ margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-9-NROPNKTA6VAWRHAMHTZ3LS45ZA\">Mr Falconer said the visit had demonstrated how UK support is helping to curb weapons smuggling and \u201cprotect our shipping route from Houthi destabilisation\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 huqwQJ margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-10-BM225RYHUJGT5JY5V3H7HKXU5M\">He also met aid organisations that he said were helping to tackle \u201cthe dire humanitarian situation\u201d that has been worsened by the Houthis&#8217; actions. <\/p>\n<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 huqwQJ margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-11-JOEC3Z4J6VD7DCWXIE3CNG3IV4\">The UN estimates that more than 227,000 Yemenis have died in the decade-long conflict, many from starvation and most of those children.<\/p>\n<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 huqwQJ margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-12-LVM3LLSQPVHJPMZU6JWJBORDQ4\">Mr Falconer visited the Ash Shab refugee camp and the Dar Saad health clinic in Aden, where he saw how UK aid is helping to tackle malnutrition, deliver vaccinations and provide assistance to the most vulnerable families. <\/p>\n<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 huqwQJ margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-13-3OS4N3WZGNFIXOVFMUDWLJXSCE\">\u201cThe humanitarian situation remains dire,\u201d he said. \u201cOnly by working closely with Yemen, and international partners, can we make a tangible difference to Yemenis, and support stability in the wider region.\u201d <\/p>\n<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 huqwQJ margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-14-KJSM5N5PCBETXCKH2HHFKK52T4\">The minister also met President Rashad Al Alimi and Prime Minister Salem Saleh Bin Braik, and reaffirmed Britain\u2019s \u201cunwavering support\u201d for the government of Yemen\u2019s stability and programme of reforms.<\/p>\n<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 huqwQJ margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-15-KIF7G6LKFVHO5IZL4EHTY7HATQ\">\u201cThe Houthis have threatened global shipping, kidnapped aid workers and deepened starvation,\u201d he said after the meeting. <\/p>\n<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 huqwQJ margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-16-T5ONMO7VTVC5HJPO7BYEOPH65U\">\u201cBut there is another side to Yemen \u2013 friendly people with a deep culture and long-standing connections to the UK.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 huqwQJ margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-17-32CS4FYHSFD6TD5G5VW25FTVAY\">The last minister to visit Yemen was Jeremy Hunt, as foreign minister, in March 2019. the drugs at the centre of America&#8217;s opioids crisis. The family is well known for their generous philanthropy towards the world&#8217;s top cultural institutions, including Guggenheim Museum, the National Portrait Gallery, Tate in Britain, Yale University and the Serpentine Gallery, to name a few. Two branches of the family control Purdue Pharma.<\/p>\n<p>Isaac Sackler and Sophie Greenberg were\u00a0Jewish immigrants who arrived in New York before the First World War. They had three sons. The first, Arthur, died before OxyContin was invented. The second, Mortimer, who died aged 93 in 2010, was a former chief executive of Purdue Pharma. The third, Raymond, died aged 97 in 2017 and was also a former chief executive of Purdue Pharma.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>It was Arthur, a psychiatrist and pharmaceutical marketeer, who started the family business dynasty.\u00a0He and his brothers bought a small company called Purdue Frederick; among their first products were laxatives and prescription earwax remover.<\/p>\n<p>Arthur&#8217;s branch of the family has not been involved in Purdue for many years and his daughter, Elizabeth, has spoken out against it, saying the company&#8217;s role in America&#8217;s drugs crisis is &#8220;morally abhorrent&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>The lawsuits that were brought by the attorneys general of New York and Massachussetts named eight Sacklers. This includes\u00a0Kathe, Mortimer, Richard, Jonathan and Ilene\u00a0Sackler Lefcourt, who are all the children of either Mortimer or Raymond.
