{"id":58180,"date":"2025-04-28T18:54:07","date_gmt":"2025-04-28T18:54:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/58180\/"},"modified":"2025-04-28T18:54:07","modified_gmt":"2025-04-28T18:54:07","slug":"thom-yorke-explains-connection-of-radioheads-hail-to-the-thief-to-new-hamlet-production","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/58180\/","title":{"rendered":"Thom Yorke explains connection of Radiohead&#8217;s &#8216;Hail To The Thief&#8217; to new &#8216;Hamlet&#8217; production"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nme.com\/artists\/thom-yorke\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Thom Yorke<\/a> has shed light on how the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nme.com\/news\/music\/thom-yorke-is-reworking-radioheads-hail-to-the-thief-for-new-hamlet-production-3797170\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Hamlet Hail To The Thief<\/a> production connects to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nme.com\/artists\/radiohead\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Radiohead<\/a>\u2018s \u2018Hail To The Thief\u2019.<\/p>\n<ul class=\"post-content-read-more\">\n<li><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nme.com\/news\/music\/jonny-greenwood-interview-the-smile-cutouts-radiohead-return-3801554\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Read More:\u00a0Jonny Greenwood tells us about The Smile\u2019s \u2018Cutouts\u2019 and the \u201cfun and natural\u201d Radiohead reunion<\/a><br \/><\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The show is based on Radiohead\u2018s 2003 record, with Yorke joining forces with Tony and Olivier Award-winning directors Steven Hoggett and Christine Jones to create a contemporary adaptation of William Shakespeare\u2019s Hamlet.<\/p>\n<p>Ahead of opening night, they sat down with <a href=\"https:\/\/observer.co.uk\/culture\/theatre\/article\/thom-yorke-hamlet-hail-to-the-thief\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The Observer<\/a> to discuss their collaboration, with Yorke revealing that despite apparent synchronicities the album and the Shakespearian tragedy share, \u201cHamlet was not in our minds when we made the record.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t not subscribe to the synchronicity thing,\u201d he added. \u201cYou know, the one about The Wizard of Oz and \u2018Dark Side of the Moon\u2019; you watch a movie, turn the sound down, put on another soundtrack and something is revealed. But, obviously, my initial reaction was, this is Hamlet, therefore it\u2019s sacrosanct, it\u2019s untouchable. You can\u2019t. But the idea didn\u2019t go away. Earlier this month, NME got an exclusive look at behind-the-scenes photos from the show, which you can check out <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nme.com\/news\/music\/check-out-these-behind-the-scenes-photos-from-thom-yorkes-new-hamlet-hail-to-the-thief-production-3851413\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Jones had noticed 20 years earlier that the record seemed to echo some of the play\u2019s dialogue at times, explaining that both \u201cstart with a question\u201d. Yorke went on to say their approach to combining the two made it feel \u201choly\u201d, adding that it was good to revisit \u2018<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nme.com\/reviews\/reviews-nme-7087-313618\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Hail To The Thief<\/a>\u2018 because he felt there was \u201cunfinished business\u201d there.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI can\u2019t really explain it, it just all turned to shit,\u201d he explained. \u201cFinishing it, mixing it, was really hard and not fun at all. So this has been a healthy process for me especially, but for the others as well, it\u2019s been a way of claiming back what the original sentiment was. The original Radiohead listing was also removed and replaced by a generic offer of \u201cfour premier concert tickets\u201d instead.<\/p>\n<p>As for work on a new album, bassist Colin Greenwood\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nme.com\/news\/music\/radiohead-interview-colin-greenwood-how-to-disappear-photo-book-band-future-tour-3803426\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">caught up with\u00a0NME<\/a>\u00a0around the release of his new photo book\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nme.com\/news\/music\/radioheads-colin-greenwood-announces-photo-book-of-life-with-the-band-how-to-disappear-3607539\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">How To Disappear<\/a>, and opened up about the band\u2019s<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nme.com\/news\/music\/radiohead-have-been-back-together-rehearsing-it-was-really-fun-3791835\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u00a0reunion rehearsals last summer\u00a0<\/a>\u2013 describing them as \u201creally good fun\u201d.
