The findings were revealed ahead of this year\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.standard.co.uk\/news\/uk\/what-when-small-business-saturday-shopping-b1042686.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Small Business Saturday<\/a>, <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/eur02.safelinks.protection.outlook.com\/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fsmallbusinesssaturdayuk.com%2F&amp;data=05%7C02%7CSean.Martin%40standard.co.uk%7C24d7bf031ee74b6ef45608de28298cb6%7C0f3a4c644dc54a768d4152d85ca158a5%7C0%7C0%7C638992356183346875%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJFbXB0eU1hcGkiOnRydWUsIlYiOiIwLjAuMDAwMCIsIlAiOiJXaW4zMiIsIkFOIjoiTWFpbCIsIldUIjoyfQ%3D%3D%7C0%7C%7C%7C&amp;sdata=fSTZUuupmGC3h8EbKVZcNDICsTeEzTHouyBWTjh1TB4%3D&amp;reserved=0\">which takes place on December 6.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.standard.co.uk\/culture\/music\/london-best-independent-record-shops-store-turntables-vinyl-b1117417.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">American Express created the marketing initiative in 2010 in the US.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSmall businesses bring character and individuality to their communities and to the whole nation, so it\u2019s great to see young people celebrating that through their conscious shopping choices,\u201d Michelle Ovens, Director of Small Business Saturday, said.<\/p>\n<p>The survey also measured <a href=\"https:\/\/www.standard.co.uk\/lifestyle\/gen-z-characteristics-money-anxiety-b1220559.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Gen Z<\/a> spending habits by comparing purchasing frequency, usage and average spend in different businesses to other age cohorts. <\/p>\n<p>Here\u2019s what the survey found:<\/p>\n<p>Which London streets made the list?<\/p>\n<p>Two London high streets, Coal Drops Yard and Stable Street, were ranked number four on the list, and Broadway Market was ranked number six. <\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/Coal Drops Yard at night, Handyside area, King's Cross urban regeneration, London, England, UK-5t1cl.jpeg\" width=\"2000\" height=\"1335\" alt=\"Coal Drops Yard at night, Handyside area, King's Cross urban regeneration, London, England, UK\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"sc-eqUAAy kRUyJB\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Coal Drops Yard at night<\/p>\n<p>Alamy Stock Photo<\/p>\n<p><strong>Top 10 Independent High Streets:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Brighton (Trafalgar Street, Sydney Street, Kensington Gardens) <\/li>\n<li>Sheffield (Devonshire Street, Division Street &amp; top of Cambridge Street) <\/li>\n<li>Manchester (Oldham Street) <\/li>\n<li>London (Coal Drops Yard &amp; Stable Street) <\/li>\n<li>Birmingham (Gibb Street &amp; Floodgate Street) <\/li>\n<li>London (Broadway Market) <\/li>\n<li>Edinburgh (Deanhaugh Street, Raeburn Place) <\/li>\n<li>Liverpool (Bold Street) <\/li>\n<li>Bristol (Gloucester Road) <\/li>\n<li>Leeds (Central Road, New Market Street, and part of Call Lane) <\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><strong>What else did the study find?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The survey also revealed the top five independent sectors being boosted by young adults\u2019 spending, revealing Gen Z\u2019s penchant for all thing vintage. These were:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Vintage Camera Shops (58.2%) <\/li>\n<li>Non-alcoholic Drink Spots (39.1%) <\/li>\n<li>Vintage Clothing Shops (38.6%) <\/li>\n<li>Health and Wellness Spots (25.1%) <\/li>\n<li>Record Shops (22.9%) <\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Dan Edelman, General Manager of Merchant Services at American Express, said: \u201cSmall businesses play a vital role in shaping vibrant communities, so it\u2019s exciting to see younger shoppers driving this trend with their enthusiasm for distinctive, retro-inspired products and experiences.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The survey also revealed that Gen Z were more likely than any other generation to say that socialising was the main reason for visiting their local high streets.
