Germany’s REWE Group is testing self-driving vehicles to deliver groceries to customers.<\/p>\n

The retailer has partnered<\/a> with Swiss technology company Loxo<\/a> and Bochum Economic Development<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The pilot project is scheduled to run for six-month in Bochum, Germany<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Loxo has implemented its Digital Driver software in a VW ID. Buzz. The vehicle is said to operate at level 4 of autonomous<\/a> driving capability.<\/p>\n

REWE<\/a> Group claims to be the first retailer to implement this level of self-driving technology nationwide.<\/p>\n

Focus On Safety<\/p>\n

REWE Germany has confirmed that a safety driver will be present on every journey, although the delivery van can operate fully autonomously.<\/p>\n

The retailer intends no changes for its customers. Groceries<\/a> will continue to be handed over by the mandatory safety driver.<\/p>\n

Delivery routes will be planned manually and handled through REWE e-commerce systems.<\/p>\n

The retailer intends to incorporate Loxo\u2019s autonomous vehicle seamlessly into REWE\u2019s existing infrastructure.<\/p>\n

Exploring New Solutions<\/p>\n

REWE Germany emphasised that the goal of this project is to gain experience with autonomous driving.<\/p>\n

The retailer plans to make adjustments as needed during the pilot phase.<\/p>\n

Kai-Uwe Reimers, head of research and innovation at REWE digital, said, \u201cWith our pilot vehicle, we want to test how highly automated vehicles can meaningfully complement our existing delivery processes.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis puts us at the forefront of identifying, developing, and implementing new technological possibilities. To ensure we get on the right track early on, we pilot and test applications quickly and continuously adapt them during implementation.\u201d<\/p>\n

Amin Amini, CEO of Loxo AG, added, \u201cOur collaboration is another step towards automated driving in urban delivery.<\/p>\n
