The doctor gave me some antibiotics and steroids and told me to take them for three weeks.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>Victoria was put on ciprofloxacin \u2014 a drug within a group of antibiotics known as fluoroquinolones that are often used to treat bacterial infections.<\/p>\n<p>She considered it a job done. However, just five days into taking the prescription, Victoria woke up in the middle of the night with heart palpitations, numbness in her hands, and an intense pressure in her head.<\/p>\n<p>The mum-of-two immediately sought medical attention. I couldn\u2019t even lie my head onto the pillow,\u2019 Victoria recalls.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018I went on lots of different medications but nothing was working. I had body twitches, muscle spasms, my digestive system shut off, I lost so much weight, I had facial nerve pain.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>\u2018I was in so much pain I spent days just crying, it was horrific. Medical professionals just kept saying I was anxious and stressed,\u2019 she continued.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018Nobody knew what was going on, I kept going back to A&amp;E. I thought I was either going to die or I wanted to die. I just couldn\u2019t deal with the pain anymore. It shouldn\u2019t be given out as a first-line antibiotic. It should be that they\u2019ve tried everything else.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>\u2018It\u2019s a horrible drug, it\u2019s not worth the risk of taking. It\u2019s not worth the long-term damage.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>As Victoria says, currently \u2018there are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/drug-safety-update\/fluoroquinolone-antibiotics-reminder-of-the-risk-of-disabling-and-potentially-long-lasting-or-irreversible-side-effects\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">no pharmacological treatments<\/a> established to be effective for these disabling and potentially long-lasting or irreversible side effects.\u2019<\/p>\n<p><a data-ico=\"hyperlink-article\" href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/tag\/british-government\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Government<\/a> advice actually states that medical professional should not prescribe fluoroquinolones \u2018for non-severe or self-limiting infections, or for mild to moderate infections unless other antibiotics that are commonly recommended for these infections are considered inappropriate.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>Understandably, Victoria feels incredibly \u2018let down\u2019 by the health service \u2014 an industry she previously had \u2018complete faith in.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>\t\t<img width=\"646\" height=\"570\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/SEI_275026692-222c-e1763636333324.jpg\" class=\"article-image wp-image-24758583\" alt=\"PIC FROM Kennedy News and Media (PIC SHOWS: VICTORIA ABOTORABI, 50, SUFFERED AN ADVERSE REACTION TO A COMMON ANTIBIOTIC TO TREAT AN EAR INFECTION) A mum suffering from an agonising five-month headache feared she was DYING and wrote goodbye letters to her kids - but it was a reaction to a common antibiotic. SEE KENNEDY NEWS COPY - 0161 697 4266\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\"\/><br \/>\n\t\tVictoria is now trying to regain control of her life (Picture: Kennedy News and Media)<\/p>\n<p>Shockingly, there are a number of personal testimonies online regarding the debilitating and serious side effects of Ciproflacacin antibiotics.<\/p>\n<p>Reportedly, serious side effects are estimated to occur in at least between\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/gpnotebook.com\/en-GB\/pages\/gynaecology\/ciprofloxacin-restrictions-and-precautions-due-to-very-rare-reports-of-disabling-and-potentially-long-lasting-or-irreversible-side-effects\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">1 and 10 people in every 10,000<\/a>\u00a0who take a fluoroquinolone.<\/p>\n<p>Someone who can relate to Victoria is Nazir Khan \u2014 who shared their story on the <a href=\"https:\/\/connect.mayoclinic.org\/discussion\/beware-ciproflacacin-antibiotics-can-cause-permanent-damage\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Mayo Clinic blog forum<\/a>, stating that after taking this medication for just five days in 2017 for a UTI, their quality of life has been \u2018steadily deteriorating.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>\u2018Over the past seven years, my condition has worsened to the point where I can barely walk, and I will soon need a wheelchair. The best way to describe my current condition is that the soles of my feet are completely numb, with a constant sensation of poor blood circulation, tingling, and severe pain,\u2019 the post read.<\/p>\n<p>For Victoria, her focus is trying to move forward and cope the best way that she can.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018Looking back to where I was to where I am now, I\u2019ve come a long way.
