Sony\u2019s new language-locked PS5 console<\/a> launches in Japan today, and it couldn\u2019t arrive at a better moment.<\/p>\n

The latest Famitsu<\/a> sales data for Japan reveals the manufacturer\u2019s machine sold just 5,855 units last week. While sales likely slowed in anticipation for the new cut-price model, the number looks apocalyptic compared to the Switch 2\u2019s total of 101,549 units during the same period.<\/p>\n

For those who missed the announcement<\/a>, the new PS5 console releasing specifically in Japan will have its language locked and will only support local PSN accounts. This is to stop the unit being exported overseas to locations like mainland China.<\/p>\n

The weak yen paired with increasing hardware prices has hit Sony\u2019s next-gen console particularly hard, where it\u2019s fallen way behind Nintendo\u2019s family of hybrid formats.<\/p>\n

Recent reports claimed previous PlayStation management was not fussed about its domestic market, but new CEO Hideaki Nishino \u2013 a Japanese executive \u2013 is desperate to improve the platform holder\u2019s position<\/a>.<\/p>\n

While it\u2019s unlikely Sony will ever be able to usurp Nintendo in its home territory, the hope is that this new model \u2013 which cuts the price significantly, from \u00a572,980 (~$473) to \u00a555,000 (~$350) \u2013 will at least give the console some momentum again.<\/p>\n

We should get the first few days of sales for this new model in next week\u2019s Famitsu.<\/p>\n
