These young animals <a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC9597823\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">endure fear, stress, injury, and disease<\/a>\u00a0\u2014 then are<strong> often sold on to other facilities or hunted in enclosed \u201ccanned\u201d operations, with their bones exported for profit<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Tourist cub-petting and commercial breeding <a href=\"https:\/\/www.the-independent.com\/climate-change\/news\/south-africa-orphan-lion-cub-holiday-scams-tourists-money-extinction-numbers-big-cats-a8489771.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">fuel a cycle of cruelty<\/a> that <strong>destroys families and denies animals even basic dignity and autonomy<\/strong>. Visiting these venues supports an industry that <strong>treats sentient beings as props and commodities<\/strong>, and puts public safety at risk.<\/p>\n<p>This industry also feeds the lucrative<a href=\"https:\/\/natureconservation.pensoft.net\/article\/124555\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> lion bone trade<\/a>, where the <b>bodies of these exploited cats are shipped to Asia for use in traditional medicine<\/b>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><strong>Lady Freethinker urges South African leaders to take the following actions to stop this suffering<\/strong>: require immediate, transparent inspections of all captive big cat facilities; suspend operations that fail basic welfare standards; end cub-petting and public handling of big cats; enforce a rapid phaseout of commercial breeding tied to substantial penalties; and fully enforce the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dffe.gov.za\/mediarelease\/george_banningofcaptivelionbreedingfacilities\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">ban on captive lion breeding<\/a> and the trade in bones and live animals.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">In addition, we ask that they ensure rescued animals are moved to accredited sanctuaries and that former keepers are supported through humane transition programs.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Sign this petition to call on South African authorities to enforce the country\u2019s commitment to end captive breeding and strengthen protections for captive big cats.<\/p>\n<p> <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/Lion-cub-1.jpg\" class=\"ss-hidden-pin-image\" alt=\"Lion cub being held for photograph - S.
