{"id":585344,"date":"2025-11-21T20:04:24","date_gmt":"2025-11-21T20:04:24","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/585344\/"},"modified":"2025-11-21T20:04:24","modified_gmt":"2025-11-21T20:04:24","slug":"i-dont-do-kneecap-irish-language-commissioner-distances-himself-from-divisive-rap-trio","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/585344\/","title":{"rendered":"\u2018I don\u2019t do Kneecap\u2019: Irish language commissioner distances himself from \u2018divisive\u2019 rap trio"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"beltel-ebe0ecc6_root beltel-ebe0ecc6_paragraph beltel-300db776_none beltel-91174671_primary beltel-1d70522a_marginbottom5 beltel-1d70522a_margintop0 beltel-b48c4984_inherit\" style=\"color:var(--color-primary-80)\">P\u00f3l Deeds, the deputy chief executive of the cross-border body Foras na Gaeilge, was formally appointed to the post of Irish language commissioner at the end of October.<\/p>\n<p class=\"beltel-ebe0ecc6_root beltel-ebe0ecc6_paragraph beltel-300db776_none beltel-91174671_primary beltel-1d70522a_marginbottom5 beltel-1d70522a_margintop0 beltel-b48c4984_inherit\" style=\"color:var(--color-primary-80)\">Talkback presenter William Crawley said that on Good Morning Ulster Mr Deeds said he was \u201cnot a fan of kneecap\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"beltel-ebe0ecc6_root beltel-ebe0ecc6_paragraph beltel-300db776_none beltel-91174671_primary beltel-1d70522a_marginbottom5 beltel-1d70522a_margintop0 beltel-b48c4984_inherit\" style=\"color:var(--color-primary-80)\">The presenter said he wanted to \u201cexplore that a little bit\u201d, saying that in recent decades there has been \u201cno phenomenon quite like this for the Irish language\u201d as he pointed to the global audiences the west Belfast and Derry trio play in front of.<\/p>\n<p class=\"beltel-ebe0ecc6_root beltel-ebe0ecc6_paragraph beltel-300db776_none beltel-91174671_primary beltel-1d70522a_marginbottom5 beltel-1d70522a_margintop0 beltel-b48c4984_inherit\" style=\"color:var(--color-primary-80)\">Mr Deeds was asked where else it could be pointed to that happening, to which he responded: \u201cWell, you can&#8217;t. And yes, there&#8217;s value in that, I suppose.<\/p>\n<p class=\"beltel-ebe0ecc6_root beltel-ebe0ecc6_paragraph beltel-300db776_none beltel-91174671_primary beltel-1d70522a_marginbottom5 beltel-1d70522a_margintop0 beltel-b48c4984_inherit\" style=\"color:var(--color-primary-80)\">\u201cThere&#8217;s probably even more value in the amount of young people who have been encouraged to use and learn and come back to their Irish.<\/p>\n<p class=\"beltel-ebe0ecc6_root beltel-ebe0ecc6_paragraph beltel-300db776_none beltel-91174671_primary beltel-1d70522a_marginbottom5 beltel-1d70522a_margintop0 beltel-b48c4984_inherit\" style=\"color:var(--color-primary-80)\">\u201cIn my previous role, I was the Director of Education in Foras na Gaeilge and I had quite a unique insight into just how successful that has been, as a result, by and large, of Kneecap and other recent cultural phenomena. So I&#8217;m not disputing that.<\/p>\n<p class=\"beltel-ebe0ecc6_root beltel-ebe0ecc6_paragraph beltel-300db776_none beltel-91174671_primary beltel-1d70522a_marginbottom5 beltel-1d70522a_margintop0 beltel-b48c4984_inherit\" style=\"color:var(--color-primary-80)\">\u201cIt&#8217;s just not a way that I would seek to see the Irish language promoted.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"P\u00f3l Deeds.\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/2654bfa4-47ef-4977-8f49-162773874661.jpg\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"100%\" data-testid=\"article-image\"  \/><\/p>\n<p class=\"beltel-ebe0ecc6_root beltel-ebe0ecc6_caption1 beltel-300db776_none beltel-91174671_secondary beltel-66f0fec7_regular beltel-1d70522a_marginbottom0 beltel-1d70522a_marginleft0 beltel-1d70522a_marginright0 beltel-1d70522a_margintop3 beltel-b48c4984_left\" style=\"color:var(--color-grey-60)\">P\u00f3l Deeds.<\/p>\n<p class=\"beltel-ebe0ecc6_root beltel-ebe0ecc6_paragraph beltel-300db776_none beltel-91174671_primary beltel-1d70522a_marginbottom5 beltel-1d70522a_margintop0 beltel-b48c4984_inherit\" style=\"color:var(--color-primary-80)\">\u201cBut I suppose that&#8217;s more a personal view than anything else.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"beltel-ebe0ecc6_root beltel-ebe0ecc6_paragraph beltel-300db776_none beltel-91174671_primary beltel-1d70522a_marginbottom5 beltel-1d70522a_margintop0 beltel-b48c4984_inherit\" style=\"color:var(--color-primary-80)\">Asked about collaborating with Kneecap or other bands who performs on stages in front of 45,000 kids using the Irish language, Mr Deeds added: \u201cThat&#8217;s not something that I personally have any interest in or my office would have any interest in and, when I was with Foras na Gaeilge, it&#8217;s not the kind of thing that they would promote either but there was an effect. I&#8217;m not disputing that.<\/p>\n<p class=\"beltel-ebe0ecc6_root beltel-ebe0ecc6_paragraph beltel-300db776_none beltel-91174671_primary beltel-1d70522a_marginbottom5 beltel-1d70522a_margintop0 beltel-b48c4984_inherit\" style=\"color:var(--color-primary-80)\">\u201cMy problem with it is that it can be quite divisive and I suppose my specific problem this morning when it was brought up in Good Morning Ulster, [it] was brought up in the context of the idea of the Irish language being weaponised.<\/p>\n<p class=\"beltel-ebe0ecc6_root beltel-ebe0ecc6_paragraph beltel-300db776_none beltel-91174671_primary beltel-1d70522a_marginbottom5 beltel-1d70522a_margintop0 beltel-b48c4984_inherit\" style=\"color:var(--color-primary-80)\">\u201cAnd I suppose that&#8217;s my real problem with it. I don&#8217;t [think they\u2019ve done that], but I think it can be used as an example of that.<\/p>\n<p class=\"beltel-ebe0ecc6_root beltel-ebe0ecc6_paragraph beltel-300db776_none beltel-91174671_primary beltel-1d70522a_marginbottom5 beltel-1d70522a_margintop0 beltel-b48c4984_inherit\" style=\"color:var(--color-primary-80)\">\u201cAnd therefore, I prefer to steer clear of anything that they do. It&#8217;s just, it&#8217;s not my personal taste. I don&#8217;t think it helps what I am going to try to do in my role.<\/p>\n<p class=\"beltel-ebe0ecc6_root beltel-ebe0ecc6_paragraph beltel-300db776_none beltel-91174671_primary beltel-1d70522a_marginbottom5 beltel-1d70522a_margintop0 beltel-b48c4984_inherit\" style=\"color:var(--color-primary-80)\">\u201cSo, no, I don&#8217;t do Kneecap.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"beltel-ebe0ecc6_root beltel-ebe0ecc6_paragraph beltel-300db776_none beltel-91174671_primary beltel-1d70522a_marginbottom5 beltel-1d70522a_margintop0 beltel-b48c4984_inherit\" style=\"color:var(--color-primary-80)\">The issue of outreach to people from a unionists and protestant background, who \u201cmay feel alienated from the Irish language\u201d, was also discussed.<\/p>\n<p class=\"beltel-ebe0ecc6_root beltel-ebe0ecc6_paragraph beltel-300db776_none beltel-91174671_primary beltel-1d70522a_marginbottom5 beltel-1d70522a_margintop0 beltel-b48c4984_inherit\" style=\"color:var(--color-primary-80)\">Mr Deeds said: \u201cWell, firstly it&#8217;s what I want to do because it&#8217;s what I&#8217;ve always done and I&#8217;ve done it well and it&#8217;s part of who I am.<\/p>\n<p class=\"beltel-ebe0ecc6_root beltel-ebe0ecc6_paragraph beltel-300db776_none beltel-91174671_primary beltel-1d70522a_marginbottom5 beltel-1d70522a_margintop0 beltel-b48c4984_inherit\" style=\"color:var(--color-primary-80)\">&#8220;It&#8217;s what i enjoy doing it&#8217;s not my job.
