If you love wine, and you love Manchester, and you\u2019d quite like to do something with your afternoon that celebrates both of those things, can I put you onto the Manchester Wine Tours? <\/strong><\/p>\n

This genius little event sees small groups of people heading across the city on, essentially, an organised and very sophisticated bar crawl. <\/p>\n

Imagine Carnage, but instead of drawing on a t-shirt and slamming neon green alcopops, you\u2019re dressed up nicely and visiting some of Manchester\u2019s top food and drink businesses. <\/p>\n

Manchester Wine Tours is owned and operated by Kel Bishop, a local food and drink writer and wine teacher. <\/p>\n

Each tour is different, taking in different bars, different wines, and different people.<\/p>\n

But as a general rule of thumb you can expect to meet up with Kel somewhere centrally, and follow her to around four different bars, sampling one or two wines in each. <\/p>\n

You end up drinking roughly two-thirds of a bottle of wine, unless you get lucky with a small group like ours, where we definitely got a little more than that. <\/p>\n

And each tour factors in a few points of interest, in classic walking tour style and for even more of a Manchester flavour. <\/p>\n

On the Manchester Wine Tour I joined, our route included a few of the city centre\u2019s newest wine hotspots, starting at Kallos, the fantastic greek restaurant in Salford that\u2019s striving to have the largest collection of greek wines in the UK.<\/p>\n

Here we tucked into their divine, puffed-up flatbreads and dips, as well as tinned octopus, all paired with a crisp sparkling Domaine Karanika Brut Cuvee Speciale.<\/p>\n

Then it was on with the big coats for a walk back into the city centre to Sterling.<\/p>\n

On a personal note, I\u2019ve been working as a food and drink journalist in Manchester for a decade. I did not expect to have any surprises along the way.<\/p>\n

But then Kel led us into the wine room at Sterling \u2013 not usually open to the public \u2013 and proved me wrong.<\/p>\n

Tucked away from the main bar, surrounded by wooden shelves glinting with different wines, we sampled a dry Chenin a New Zealand Lethbridge Chardonnay, and all realised we had been judging Chardonnay far too harshly.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s at this stop that Kel really breaks down the art of wine tasting, and how to build your understanding of a wine from sight to smell to sip. <\/p>\n

Suitably warmed up, it was time for a dash across to Winsome, the new British restaurant that\u2019s already been added to the Michelin guide, where we crammed around a centrepiece of wine bottle candles dripping in wax to discover the delights of the Greek Alkemi Xenomavro rose \u2013 my favourite wine from the night that I bought an extra bottle of to take home.<\/p>\n

Each stop of the wine tour offers snacks as well as the wines, and for Winsome it was a delicate squash dish picked by the chef to compliment our drinks. <\/p>\n

We also sampled a lethally good Terre de Zeus Xinomavro here \u2013 it was a good day for Greek wine. <\/p>\n

By this point of the tour we\u2019re like a slightly wobbly gaggle of baby birds, scurrying after Kel towards our final spot for the night \u2013 Beeswing.<\/p>\n

The Kampus bar provided an Austrian Funkstille Zweigelt (ordered an extra glass of this, it was so good) and a The Good Luck Club Cabernet Sauvignon from the Barossa Valley, plus boards of charcuterie and cheese. <\/p>\n

My brain is like a sieve for wine facts (I\u2019ve written up most of this by looking at the labels), but I guess that just means the Manchester Wine Tour will have a repeat customer.<\/p>\n

Kel is an expert at reading the room and deftly tailors her tastings to suit each person\u2019s wine experience. For some it\u2019s just the pleasure of drinking a nice wine (here, have a top-up), for others it\u2019s digging into the history and politics of the drink. Some just wanted to uncover a new bar or restaurant, playing tourist in their own city.<\/p>\n

It felt as though all seven of us on our tour took something different away from the exact same experience \u2013 and is that not the beauty of good hospitality?<\/p>\n

It\u2019s all completely accessible, approachable and very, very fun.<\/p>\n

A nightclub in Manchester has shared a picture of a recent customer\u2019s bill \u2013 and to call them a big spender would be underselling it. <\/strong><\/p>\n

The luxury nightclub posted a photo of a bill that racked up to an eye-watering \u00a388k. <\/p>\n

Or, to be very specific, \u00a388,589.60. <\/p>\n

The flash customer was at The Continental Club, otherwise known as The Conti, an \u2018exclusive\u2019 bar and club on South King Street. <\/p>\n

The bar is a drastic departure from the former nightlife spot which stood in its place \u2013 the building was previously home to South, a legendary underground club famed for its alternative soundtrack. <\/p>\n

Now it\u2019s got a new life as a nightlife haunt where, apparently, it\u2019s not uncommon to spend the equivalent of a small terrace house on drinks. <\/p>\n

The bar shared the picture of the receipt yesterday, describing it as a \u2018record-breaker\u2019. <\/p>\n

The Continental Club has claimed that it\u2019s not only the biggest spend in its own walls, but the most expensive bill to have ever taken place in any club in Manchester. <\/p>\n

Curious to see how exactly a person could spend \u00a388k on drinks? Let\u2019s break down some of the more expensive items. <\/p>\n

Let\u2019s kick things off with three bottles of Clase Azul Ultra Extra Anejo, a tequila which retails for around \u00a32.5k but set this customer back \u00a39,500 a pop\u2026<\/p>\n

Then there\u2019s a couple of magnums of Dom Perignon rose champagne (\u00a32,000 each), a few bottles of Armand de Brignac Ace of Spades Champagne (\u00a31,500 each), and a few \u00a3950 bottles of Chivas Regal 25 whiskey. <\/p>\n

It makes the \u00a3850 Grey Goose at the bottom seem like child\u2019s play.<\/p>\n

They also slammed at least 48 Red Bulls, according to the bill.<\/p>\n

Then on top of that you\u2019ve got a staggering \u00a38k worth of service charge \u2013 some very happy staff went home that night, I\u2019d imagine. <\/p>\n

The Continental Club wrote: \u201cSome come to sip\u2026others come to set records. The biggest table spend to EVER take place in a club in Manchester.\u201d<\/p>\n

V.Goode Pies \u2013 Michelin-recommended Manchester restaurant launches new pie shop<\/p>\n

A new pie shop has opened in Manchester today \u2013 and it comes from the same team behind a Michelin-recommended restaurant. <\/strong><\/p>\n

Chefs Shaun Moffat (of Winsome fame) and Sam Grainger (Madre, Belzan, Doug\u2019s and loads more) have joined forces for V.Goode Pies. <\/p>\n

The Oxford Road pie shop promises to serve \u2018the kind of pies Manchester\u2019s been waiting for\u2019 that won\u2019t cost the earth.<\/p>\n

Shaun and Sam dreamed up the idea following the success of the pie offering at Winsome<\/a><\/strong>, which are a highlight of its proudly British menu. <\/p>\n

Now open on Oxford Road, you\u2019ll find four core individual pies as well as breakfast pies. <\/p>\n

Expect classic flavours like cheese and onion, and meat and potato, but also less common creations like a lasagne pie and a breakfast pie too.\u00a0<\/p>\n

There\u2019ll be the option to have your pie served in a barm, Wigan kebab-style, or have it as it comes after a hefty dunk in a vat of gravy. <\/p>\n

You can also have it served on a classic dinner tray, with mash and mushy peas on the side. <\/p>\n

As well as traditional fillings, V. Goode Pies will have more out-there bakes like a lasagne pie, where layers of pasta are packed into a pie crust. <\/p>\n

You can also expect rotating specials and collaborations. <\/p>\n

V.Goode Pies \u2013 or, to use its government name, Valerie Goode\u2019s Pies \u2013 is inspired by co-founder Tom Fastiggi\u2019s dinner lady grandmother and pie connoisseur.<\/p>\n

V.Goode Pies will take over the old Loaf<\/a><\/strong> store on Oxford Road and is set to open on 18 November, with a pop-up also planned at Freight Island this winter. <\/p>\n

The pie shop will be open Monday to Saturday, from 8am until they sell out.<\/p>\n
