(<a href=\"https:\/\/www.pexels.com\/photo\/a-man-and-woman-doing-exercise-8939945\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Vlada Karpovich\/Pexels<\/a>)<\/p>\n<p>What&#8217;s more, yoga can be <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2017\/02\/09\/well\/move\/does-yoga-qualify-as-an-aerobic-workout.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">difficult to categorize<\/a> as either aerobic or anaerobic, and its intensity can vary depending on the technique used.<\/p>\n<p>Perhaps these differences in practice can explain why the outcomes differ from trial to trial.<\/p>\n<p>The most recent meta-analysis cannot explain why yoga may be particularly beneficial for sleep, but several possibilities exist.<\/p>\n<p>Not only can yoga raise the heart rate and push the muscles, it can also regulate breathing. Research <a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.4018\/978-1-5225-2788-6.ch005\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">indicates<\/a> that breath control can activate the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Parasympathetic_nervous_system\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">parasympathetic nervous system<\/a>, which is involved in &#8216;rest and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/study-of-over-400000-people-links-gut-bacteria-with-insomnia-risk\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">digestion<\/a>&#8216;.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/newsletter?utm_source=promo_health\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/health-newsletter-subscribe-promo-final-642x337.jpg\" alt=\"Subscribe to ScienceAlert's free fact-checked newsletter\" width=\"642\" height=\"337\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-181305\"   loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Some <a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.4103\/hm.hm_78_19\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">studies<\/a> even suggest yoga regulates <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/brain-cells-may-actually-try-to-predict-the-future-during-sleep\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">brainwave activity<\/a> patterns, which could <a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.33745\/ijzi.2023.v09ispl2.006\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">promote<\/a> deeper sleep.<\/p>\n<p>But while <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/want-better-sleep-this-one-piece-of-advice-seems-to-work-for-almost-everybody\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">robust<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/bad-night-of-sleep-this-20-minute-fix-can-do-wonders\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">evidence<\/a> suggests that exercise in general is beneficial for sleep, studies that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/these-4-simple-exercises-could-help-break-your-insomnia\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">compare specific exercises<\/a> and their long-term effects are lacking.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/1755736212_119_0.jpg\" alt=\"YouTube Thumbnail\" tabindex=\"0\" role=\"button\" class=\"youtube-thumbnail-preview\" loading=\"lazy\"\/> frameborder=&#8221;0\u2033 allow=&#8221;accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share&#8221; referrerpolicy=&#8221;strict-origin-when-cross-origin&#8221; allowfullscreen&gt;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Caution should be exercised when interpreting findings from studies on sleep disturbances, given the limited number of studies included and the unique characteristics of the sleep disturbances population,&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1007\/s41105-025-00596-7\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">warn<\/a> researchers at Harbin Sport University.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Related: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/humans-used-to-sleep-twice-every-night-heres-why-it-vanished\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Humans Used to Sleep Twice Every Night.
