Five men were convicted over the heist at Danyaal Jewellers in Sparkbrook after terrifying daylight smash and grab<\/p>\n

Ram-raiders who smashed their way into a Birmingham jewellery shop have been ordered to repay almost \u00a3250,000 or face more jail time.<\/p>\n

They crashed a stolen Toyota Hilux into the front of Danyaal Jewellers in Sparkbrook<\/a> on March 3, 2022.<\/p>\n

Three of the men, armed with a sledgehammer, went inside, smashed their way into two display cabinets and began stashing jewellery in bags.<\/p>\n

A fourth man remained in the Hilux and a fifth man acted as ‘crowd control’ waving an axe at witnesses, West Midlands Police<\/a> said.<\/p>\n

Dramatic footage of the raid was caught on the store’s CCTV system while mobile phone footage taken by members of the public also captured it.<\/p>\n

Five men were found guilty of conspiracy to rob and possessing an offensive weapon following a four-week trial at Birmingham<\/a> Crown Court.<\/p>\n

They were John Gourlay, 49, from Pershore Road, Selly Oak<\/a>; Trevor Leek, 44, of Southgate Road, Kingstanding, Justin Boylan, 51, of Schoolacre Road, Shard End, Arfan Latif, 38, from Kinver Croft, Balsall Heath; and Hassan Zulfiqar, 26, also from Kinver Croft.<\/p>\n

They were handed prison sentences totalling 72-and-a-half years.<\/p>\n

A lengthy investigation was undertaken by the police’s Economic Crime Unit, including a review of the assets of the gang.<\/p>\n

Now they must repay \u00a3180,075 within three months, or face another nine months in prison.<\/p>\n

The remaining balance will live with the gang for their lifetime until the full benefit figure is paid back.<\/p>\n

Financial Investigator Andrew Reedman, who led the investigation, said \u201cThis was a serious offence and had a major impact on the victims and the business involved.<\/p>\n
