Glasgow cabbie Raja Sadiq was given a warning by the city’s licensing committee after police objected to his licence renewal.<\/p>\n

A private hire driver caught with \u00a320,000 in his bank account, which had been obtained by fraud, has been allowed to keep his licence.<\/p>\n

Raja Sadiq pleaded guilty to possessing the cash, which was criminal property, and was sentenced to 160 hours of unpaid work earlier this month.<\/p>\n

Police Scotland<\/a> objected to Mr Sadiq\u2019s bid to renew his private hire car driver\u2019s licence as a result of the incident.<\/p>\n

But councillors on Glasgow’s<\/a> licensing committee agreed to grant a restricted one-year licence to Mr Sadiq.<\/p>\n

Cllr Alex Wilson, SNP, the chair of the licensing committee<\/a>, recorded his dissent.<\/p>\n

The committee did hand Mr Sadiq \u2014 who has been tagged for seven weeks, keeping him indoors between 7pm and 7am \u2014 a severe warning over his future conduct.<\/p>\n

A Police Scotland representative told councillors that the applicant \u201cdid have possession of criminal property\u2026 namely \u00a320,000\u201d. She said the incident had occurred in 2020.<\/p>\n

The applicant\u2019s solicitor said her client had been in \u201ccontinuous employment since the offence as a taxi driver\u201d and had \u201caccrued no complaints during this time nor any further convictions\u201d.<\/p>\n

She said Mr Sadiq had \u201clearned his lesson\u201d and described him as \u201ca pillar of his community\u201d. \u201cHe\u2019s the main earner of his family, essentially the breadwinner,\u201d she added.<\/p>\n
