Notes from a closed-door meeting shared with POLITICO also show that Saudi Arabia sought to bash the bloc <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.eu\/article\/eu-carbon-border-adjustment-mechanism-trade-tariffs-cop30-india-china\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">for imposing carbon tariffs<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe faced a very strong petro-industry\u2026 which organised a blocking majority here against any progress,\u201d Schneider said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The bloc was frustrated about what they saw as Brazil pandering to its BRICS allies \u2014\u00a0China, India, South Africa and other emerging economies \u2014 in walking right over the EU\u2019s red lines on providing climate aid and pushing the bloc into uncomfortable discussions on trade measures.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>But they also left feeling abandoned by traditional allies, such as small island states, that they had counted on to back their push for more climate action.
