A Co Antrim<\/a> community is reeling after two young people were killed in a crash on Saturday night.<\/p>\n Emergency services were called to the scene of a road traffic collision involving a grey Skoda Fabia and a grey Cupra Formentor on the Lurgan<\/a> Road in Glenavy<\/a> shortly after 6.25pm last night<\/p>\n PSNI<\/a> officers attended alongside emergency service partners, however the two occupants of the Cupra, a man and woman, were pronounced deceased at the scene<\/a>.<\/p>\n READ MORE: Child among three with serious injuries after crash<\/a>READ MORE: Man and woman die after serious crash<\/a><\/p>\n The driver of the Skoda was transferred to hospital for treatment to his injuries. The Lurgan Road remained closed on Sunday morning with a diversion in place at Pigeonstown Road. It has since reopened.<\/p>\n Alliance MLA for South Antrim John Blair visited the accident scene at Glenavy on Sunday morning and said the local community was shocked and saddened by the news of the crash<\/p>\n He told Belfast Live<\/a>: “This really is the saddest of news coming from Glennavy today and my thoughts are with the families and friends of the young people who have been casualties of this tragic road traffic accident.<\/p>\n “Anyone I’ve spoken to from Glenavy today is really shocked and saddened by the news, that there’s a feeling of utmost despair that these things could happen and that our rural roads remain dangerous and that’s the feeling resonating across the community.<\/p>\n “It’s the very worst news any family could receive, especially in the run up to the Christmas period. I know, however, that Glenavy is a very settled and close-knit community and, once that community gets over its own sadness and shock, I have no doubt they will rally round to help others and help each other.”<\/p>\n Sinn F\u00e9in<\/a> councillor for Lisburn<\/a> and Castlereagh Gary McCleave also expressed his condolences: \u201cThis is heartbreaking news for the loved ones of both people who lost their lives.<\/p>\n \u201cI want to send my condolences to them at this devastating time. Anyone with information on the crash should contact the PSNI.\u201d<\/p>\n Many others took to social media to express their shock following the weekend tragedy.<\/p>\n One said: “Our deepest condolences to all their family, friends and relatives at this devastating time. There are no words to describe the pain and heartbreak.<\/p>\n “It\u2019s a cruel, cruel world, especially coming up to Christmas<\/a>\u2026 two beautiful lives taken far too soon. May they both get the best bed in Heaven, and may God give strength to all who are grieving.”<\/p>\n “Rip angel. My heart bleeds for the broken hearted families left behind. Please everyone keep the broken hearted in your prayers,” said another.<\/p>\n A PSNI spokesperson said: “Enquiries are continuing, and we would appeal to anyone who witnessed the collision or who may have digital footage which could assist with our investigation, to contact the Collision Investigation Unit on 101, quoting reference number 1121 22\/11\/25.”<\/p>\n Separately a man, two women and two children were taken to hospital after another serious crash on Saturday afternoon<\/a>. Both women and one child are being treated for injuries which are described as serious.<\/p>\n Police are appealing for witnesses following the two-vehicle road traffic collision on the Old Ballynahinch Road<\/a>, outside Saintfield. The collision is reported to have occurred around 5pm and involved a bronze Volkswagen CC and grey Audi A4.<\/p>\n “We are appealing to anyone who may have witnessed this, or who may have dashcam footage of the area between 4:45pm and 5:30pm to please get in contact with officers on 101, quoting reference 1021 of 22\/11\/25,” a police spokesperson added.<\/p>\n “A report can be submitted online using the non-emergency reporting form via http:\/\/www.psni.police.uk\/makeareport\/<\/a>.
