{"id":590251,"date":"2025-11-24T06:30:22","date_gmt":"2025-11-24T06:30:22","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/590251\/"},"modified":"2025-11-24T06:30:22","modified_gmt":"2025-11-24T06:30:22","slug":"the-student-skyscrapers-coming-to-loom-over-mancunian-way","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/590251\/","title":{"rendered":"The student skyscrapers coming to loom over Mancunian Way"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>They would open in the 2030s<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/2_Screenshot-2025-11-21-150707.jpg\" loading=\"eager\"  \/>The plans for the blocks on Weston Hall and Pendulum Hotel(Image: iQ Students)<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"men\">Four student accommodation towers, including a 50-storey skyscraper, could replace ageing uni halls and a hotel in a \u00a3224m project.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"men\">More than 2,500 student rooms could be squeezed into the former <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.manchestereveningnews.co.uk\/all-about\/the-university-of-manchester\" target=\"\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">University of Manchester<\/a> north campus site, sandwiched between Sackville Street and Charles Street in the shadow of Mancunian Way.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"men\">They are planned by iQ Students, which has announced plans to demolish the university\u2019s 528-bed Weston Hall residence and the 118-room Pendulum Hotel next door. In their place, four towers will be constructed to meet sky-high demand for rooms.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"men\">\u201cManchester continues to experience strong and sustained demand for purpose-built student accommodation in the right locations and many students are occupying the mainstream housing stock, which has a negative impact on the availability and affordability of housing to meet local residents\u2019 needs,\u201d the company said. \u201cThe site occupies a prime location within the <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.manchestereveningnews.co.uk\/all-about\/oxford-road\" target=\"\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">Oxford Road<\/a> Corridor, adjacent to University of Manchester buildings.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"men\">The first two skyscrapers will be 18 and 50 storeys tall, connected by a nine-storey \u2018link building\u2019. Phase B will contain 32 and 24 storey blocks, with a new green courtyard being installed around the four towers.
