Maternity Support Workers (MSWs) across Walsall Healthcare are being recognised today as the Trust marks the annual focus on their invaluable roles.<\/p>\n
Promoted by the Royal College of Midwives, Maternity Support Workers\u2019 Day celebrates the vital contribution MSWs make to families during pregnancy, birth and early parenthood, across both hospital and community services.<\/p>\n
MSWs play a key role in supporting Midwives and caring for women, newborns and families. Their work can include providing emotional support, helping with feeding, making routine observations, preparing equipment and assisting with day-to-day care on wards and in clinics.<\/p>\n
While responsible for their own actions, all care they provide is delegated and supervised by a Registered Midwife, forming an essential part of safe and high-quality maternity care.<\/p>\n
As part of this year\u2019s celebrations, Jodie, who joined the Trust as an MSW one year ago, explains why she chose the role.<\/p>\n
She said: \u201cI was originally a special needs teacher and wanted to progress in my career. I knew the qualifications and skills I had would be a good fit for this role, so I applied \u2013 and I was thrilled to be successful. My favourite part of the job is supporting new mums and babies. They are often in a vulnerable position, and it\u2019s lovely to help guide them through such an important chapter.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cFor anyone thinking about becoming an MSW, I\u2019d say go for it. It\u2019s incredibly rewarding, and there is so much love, warmth and purpose in this role.\u201d<\/p>\n
Jo Wright, Director of Midwifery, Gynaecology and Sexual Health, said: \u201cOur Maternity Support Workers are an essential part of our maternity service, and their compassion, skill and dedication make a real difference to the families we care for.
