All about the customer.\u00a0Coming soon.&#8221;<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>That led to all kinds of speculation \u2013 some good, some not so good \u2014 about what Verizon\u2019s got cooking<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>They got our attention. Now we wait<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Seven words and one number. That\u2019s all Verizon is saying about Project 624.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Project 624. All about the customer.\u00a0Coming soon.&#8221; That\u2019s about all we know for sure based on Thursday\u2019s cryptic <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/feed\/update\/urn:li:activity:7321246747672940544\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">post<\/a> from Verizon Consumer Group CEO Sowmyanaryan Sampath on <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/sampathstech\/status\/1915517732256457204\" target=\"_blank\">social media<\/a>. And we\u2019re falling for it, writing about what Verizon wants us to write about because it piqued our interest.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Of course, like any good stunt, it could backfire. This <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reddit.com\/r\/verizon\/comments\/1k77ayo\/any_idea_what_project_624_is\/?rdt=55791\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Reddit thread<\/a> is so full of snark, one has to wonder why anyone would choose to be a Verizon customer. Then again, it also raises some intriguing questions. Like, is Project 624 a reference to the numbers 624 on the phone\u2019s keypad, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reddit.com\/r\/verizon\/comments\/1k77ayo\/comment\/mp9w2cj\/?context=3\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">representing MAI, i.e., some kind of mobile AI<\/a>? Or is it a throwback to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=8A3HZvGN0qs\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Chicago\u2019s 1970s song, \u201c25 or 6 to 4\u201d<\/a>?<\/p>\n<p>Who knows?! Verizon didn\u2019t respond to a request for more information. So in the spirit of the game, we reached out to a handful of analysts to get their take on what\u2019s going on.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Maybe it\u2019s just a date<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Recon Analytics founder Roger Entner pointed out that Project 624 was announced on April 24, leading us to believe Verizon\u2019s 624 is going to be announced on June 24. The significance of that date? We\u2019re not entirely sure, although one analyst noted the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.numerologistpro.com\/numerology-numbers-big\/numerology-number-624-meaning\/numerology-number-624-meaning\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">number\u2019s meaning in numerology<\/a>. Apparently, 624 is known as an \u201cangel number,\u201d which carries a spiritual message believed to be sent by angels or the universe. Who knew?<\/p>\n<p>Others pointed out the long lead time \u2013 and not in a customer-friendly way. \u201cIf you\u2019re making a customer announcement \u2026 teasing customers with a two-month wait for an \u2018all about the customer\u2019 announcement isn\u2019t terribly customer friendly,\u201d quipped IDC analyst Jason Leigh via email with a \u201cwink\u201d emoji.<\/p>\n<p>Jeff Moore, principal at Wave7 Research, said Project 624 \u201cwill only be a little better than Project 623.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>A phone app? Or something else?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Jokes aside, Moore noted that Verizon lost 289,000 postpaid phone customers in Q1 2025, and \u201csomething needs to be done.\u201d His guess is Verizon will do something with a phone app that could involve some combination of AI and customer support.<\/p>\n<p>Another possibility? Verizon could try to start addressing real customer pain points. For example, it could actually answer phone calls to Verizon retail stores with in-store reps, rather than routing calls to an off-site customer service desk. Wave7 has reported for five years now that it\u2019s impossible to get someone at a Verizon corporate store to answer the phone. (Oh, the irony of a phone company not answering the phone is lost on no one.)<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m aware that Verizon has call centers, but it would be useful in many ways to have the option of calling any Verizon store you\u2019d like,\u201d Moore said.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><strong>A page from T-Mobile\u2019s playbook?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s possible Verizon is taking a page out of T-Mobile\u2019s \u201cun-carrier\u201d playbook. According to Moore, T-Mobile identified numerous problems in the wireless industry and set out starting to address them back in 2013 \u2013 and it worked.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cT-Mobile went from being the #4 player in U.S. wireless to being on an equal footing with Verizon and AT&amp;T, while offering the best 5G network,\u201d he remarked. \u201cNow, that was an evolution.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>To be sure, whatever Verizon is up to, its obvious intention is to shine the light on itself and away from its rivals AT&amp;T and T-Mobile. Verizon and T-Mobile especially have a history of going at it. \u00a0Early last week, T-Mobile <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fierce-network.com\/wireless\/t-mobile-says-new-5-year-price-guarantee-reals\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">dropped its \u201c5-year price guarantee\u201d<\/a> on the same day Verizon announced its Q1 earnings. On Thursday, Verizon released its \u201cProject 624\u201d teaser right about the time <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fierce-network.com\/wireless\/t-mobile-boasts-best-ever-q1-shares-plunge\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">T-Mobile was announcing its Q1 results<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Tit for tat.
