Bollywood actor and former politician Dharmendra, whose career spanned more than six decades and more than 300 films, has been described as a \u201clegend of Indian cinema\u201d after his death at the age of 89. <\/p>\n

While his family has yet to confirm news of his passing, film director and producer Karan Johar, who is close to them, posted an obituary on Monday calling it \u201cthe end of an era\u201d. Dharmendra was admitted to a Mumbai hospital earlier this month.<\/p>\n

\u201cToday there is a gaping hole in our industry, a space that can never be filled by anyone,\u201d Johar posted on Instagram. \u201cThe embodiment of a hero in mainstream cinema, incredibly handsome and the most enigmatic screen presence, he is and will always be a bona fide Legend of Indian Cinema. <\/p>\n

\u201cWe love you kind sir. We will miss you so much. The heavens are blessed today. It will always be my blessing to have worked with you.\u201d <\/p>\n

Indian media also shared photos of Malini and daughter Esha Deol as well as a number of Bollywood actors arriving at a Mumbai crematorium, dressed in white, the colour traditionally worn for mourning in Hindu funerals.<\/p>\n

Veteran actor Amitabh Bachchan, his son and actor Abhishek Bachchan, actor Salman Khan and producer Siddharth Roy Kapur were among stars photographed at the Vile Parle Crematorium on Monday afternoon. <\/p>\n

One of Indian cinema\u2019s original superstars, Dharmendra was celebrated for his matinee-idol looks, humility and versatility. He became one of the most commercially successful actors of his time, starring in enduring blockbusters such as Phool Aur Patthar (1966), Chupke Chupke (1975) and Sholay<\/a> (1975).<\/p>\n

Tributes have been rolling in from across the industry. Actress Kajol, who posted a photo of the actor with her son Yug, 15, posted on Instagram: \u201cThe OG of the Good Man is gone and the world is poorer for it. Somehow it seems like we are only losing the good people in it. Kind to the core and loved always. RIP Dharamji \u2026 with love always.\u201d<\/p>\n

Kajol’s husband, actor and producer Ajay Devgn, called Dharmendra \u201ca legend\u201d. <\/p>\n

\u201cHis warmth, generosity and presence inspired generations of artists,\u201d he wrote. \u201cWe’ve lost someone who shaped the very soul of our cinema.\u201d<\/p>\n

Actor and director Farhan Akhtar called him \u201cirreplaceable\u201d. <\/p>\n

\u201cThank you for six decades of entertainment,\u201d he said. \u201cWe are fortunate to have experienced your warmth, your kindness, your generosity, your charm, your intensity and your wit, on and off the screen.\u201d<\/p>\n

Actress Raveena Tandon posted with a broken heart emoji: \u201cHandsomest man on the silver screen with a golden heart.\u201d <\/p>\n

Born in Punjab on December 8, 1935, Dharmendra moved to Mumbai in the 1950s to pursue acting. He made his screen debut with Dil Bhi Tera Hum Bhi Tere (1960), but it was Shola Aur Shabnam (1961) that brought him his first commercial success. A string of hits followed \u2013 from Anpadh (1962) and Bandini (1963) to Ayee Milan Ki Bela (1964), in which he played a rare antagonist. The 1966 drama Phool Aur Patthar, a major box-office hit, firmly established his star status.<\/p>\n

The 1970s cemented Dharmendra\u2019s legend, marking both his peak as a leading man and the beginning of his celebrated on-screen partnership with Hema Malini \u2013 a pairing that would eventually lead to marriage. <\/p>\n

Their relationship drew controversy at the time, as Dharmendra was already married with four children, but their chemistry proved irresistible to audiences. The couple appeared together in 31 films, including Jeevan Mrityu and Sharafat (both 1970) and Dost (1974). Their most well-known collaboration, Sholay (1975), remains one of India\u2019s most beloved films, co-starring Amitabh Bachchan, Jaya Bhaduri and Sanjeev Kumar.<\/p>\n

Dharmendra continued acting throughout his life, often sharing the screen with his sons, actors Sunny<\/a> and Bobby Deol<\/a>, from his first marriage. Their 2011 comedy Yamla Pagla Deewana<\/a> spawned two sequels. He also appeared in Tell Me O Khuda (2011), directed by Hema Malini and featuring their daughter Esha Deol<\/a>. The couple\u2019s younger daughter, Ahana Deol, also briefly pursued acting.<\/p>\n

Outside films, Dharmendra served one term as a Member of Parliament representing the Bharatiya Janata Party<\/a>, though he was often criticised for his limited attendance in Parliament, preferring to focus on his film career.<\/p>\n

He also founded Vijayta Films in 1983, a production house that launched several successful projects, and later appeared as a judge on India\u2019s Got Talent in 2011.<\/p>\n

When asked what sustained him after decades in the spotlight, Dharmendra told The Asian Age in 2016: \u201cI am a simple man with simple needs. What keeps me going is not fame, fortune or success but the love of the people.\u201d<\/p>\n

Mercer, the investment consulting arm of US services company Marsh & McLennan, expects its wealth division to at least double its assets under management (AUM) in the Middle East as wealth in the region continues to grow despite economic headwinds, a company official said.<\/p>\n

Mercer Wealth, which globally has $160 billion in AUM, plans to boost its AUM in the region to $2-$3bn in the next 2-3 years from the present $1bn, said Yasir AbuShaban, a Dubai-based principal with Mercer Wealth.<\/p>\n

\u201cWithin the next two to three years, we are looking at reaching $2 to $3 billion as a conservative estimate and we do see an opportunity to do so,\u201d said Mr AbuShaban.<\/p>\n

Mercer does not directly make investments, but allocates clients\u2019 money they have discretion to, to professional asset managers. They also provide advice to clients.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe have buying power. We can negotiate on their (client\u2019s) behalf with asset managers to provide them lower fees than they otherwise would have to get on their own,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n

Mercer Wealth\u2019s clients include sovereign wealth funds, family offices, and insurance companies among others.<\/p>\n

From its office in Dubai, Mercer also looks after Africa, India and Turkey, where they also see opportunity for growth.<\/p>\n

Wealth creation in Middle East and Africa (MEA) grew 8.5 per cent to $8.1 trillion last year from $7.5tn in 2015, higher than last year\u2019s global average of 6 per cent and the second-highest growth in a region after Asia-Pacific which grew 9.9 per cent, according to consultancy Boston Consulting Group (BCG). In the region, where wealth grew just 1.9 per cent in 2015 compared with 2014, a pickup in oil prices has helped in wealth generation.<\/p>\n

BCG is forecasting MEA wealth will rise to $12tn by 2021, growing at an annual average of 8 per cent.<\/p>\n

Drivers of wealth generation in the region will be split evenly between new wealth creation and growth of performance of existing assets, according to BCG.<\/p>\n

Another general trend in the region is clients\u2019 looking for a comprehensive approach to investing, according to Mr AbuShaban.<\/p>\n

\u201cInstitutional investors or some of the families are seeing a slowdown in the available capital they have to invest and in that sense they are looking at optimizing the way they manage their portfolios and making sure they are not investing haphazardly and different parts of their investment are working together,\u201d said Mr AbuShaban.<\/p>\n

Some clients also have a higher appetite for risk, given the low interest-rate environment that does not provide enough yield for some institutional investors. These clients are keen to invest in illiquid assets, such as private equity and infrastructure.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat we have seen is a desire for higher returns in what has been a low-return environment specifically in various fixed income or bonds,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

\u201cIn this environment, we have seen a de facto increase in the risk that clients are taking in things like illiquid investments, private equity investments, infrastructure and private debt, those kind of investments were higher illiquidity results in incrementally higher returns.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Abu Dhabi Investment Authority, one of the largest sovereign wealth funds, said in its 2016 report that has gradually increased its exposure in direct private equity and private credit transactions, mainly in Asian markets and especially in China and India. The authority\u2019s private equity department focused on structured equities owing to \u201ctheir defensive characteristics.\u201d<\/p>\n

Can NRIs vote in the election?<\/p>\n

Indians residing overseas cannot cast their ballot abroad<\/p>\n

Non-resident Indians or NRIs can vote only by going to a polling booth in their home constituency<\/p>\n

There are about 3.1 million NRIs living overseas<\/p>\n

Indians have urged political parties to extend the right to vote to citizens residing overseas<\/p>\n

A committee of the Election Commission of India approved of proxy voting for non-resident Indians<\/p>\n

Proxy voting means that a person can authorise someone residing in the same polling booth area to cast a vote on his behalf.<\/p>\n

This option is currently available for the armed forces, police and government officials posted outside India<\/p>\n

A bill was passed in the lower house of India\u2019s parliament or the Lok Sabha to extend proxy voting to non-resident Indians<\/p>\n

However, this did not come before the upper house or Rajya Sabha and has lapsed<\/p>\n

The issue of NRI voting draws a huge amount of interest in India and overseas<\/p>\n

Over the past few months, Indians have received messages on mobile phones and on social media claiming that NRIs can cast their votes online<\/p>\n

The Election Commission of India then clarified that NRIs could not vote online<\/p>\n

The Election Commission lodged a complaint with the Delhi Police asking it to clamp down on the people spreading misinformation<\/p>\n
