He was joined on the panel by Josh Dean MP, Saranya Thambirajah and Alex Stanley from the National Union Students (NUS), Rose Stephenson from the Higher Education Policy Institute (HEPI), and representatives from two students\u2019 unions.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Delegates from students&#8217; unions across the UK, including Bristol SU, raised concerns to the panel about the government&#8217;s plans to increase tuition fees in line with inflation, as well as the implications of the Post-16 Education and Skills White Paper. <\/p>\n<p>Katie Poyner, Bristol SU\u2019s Union Affairs Officer, highlighted concerns about the plans for institutions of \u2018higher quality\u2019 to be able to charge higher fees under the new White Paper. She spoke to Epigram after the meeting, saying:<\/p>\n<p>\u2018If student representation is effective and it does improve teaching quality standards in the university educational realm, that could be linked to tuition fee increases, which is at direct odds with what representatives want to do.\u2019<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/WhatsApp-Image-2025-11-23-at-12.25.01--1-.jpeg\" class=\"kg-image\" alt=\"\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"2000\" height=\"1125\"  \/>Interview with Alex Sobel MP | Epigram \/ Alp Kobanbay<\/p>\n<p>Before the event, Epigram spoke to Saranya Thambirajah, a representative from the NUS. She criticised the link between the quality of institutions and higher fees, saying it \u2018risks forcing students from widening participation backgrounds into potentially lower quality courses.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>\u2018It would create an unfair, staggered system\u2019, she added.<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"kg-bookmark-container\" href=\"https:\/\/epigram.org.uk\/bristol-su-opposes-raising-tuition-fees-with-inflation\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><\/p>\n<p>SU urges government to \u2018think again\u2019 on raising tuition fees in line with inflation<\/p>\n<p>The SU\u2019s full-time officers criticise the continuation of a \u2018broken tuition fee model\u2019 that has led to \u2018crisis\u2019 in higher education.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/WhatsApp-Image-2025-10-29-at-13.41.52-2.jpeg\" alt=\"\" onerror=\"this.style.display = 'none'\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Another issue raised during the meeting was the cost of living. Katie highlighted the problem of the \u2018one-size-fits-all approach\u2019 to maintenance loans for students outside of London.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018Regional disparity is something that really should be considered\u2019, she argued, citing the SU\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bristolsu.org.uk\/articles\/loans-that-last-your-fto-s-call-for-maintenance-loan-reform?ref=epigram.org.uk\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Loans that Last<\/a> campaign from last year. The general maintenance loan \u2018isn&#8217;t enough to address the core living cost \u2026 \u2026especially in Bristol, which is like, the second most expensive city to live in\u2019, she added.<\/p>\n<p>Reflecting on the event, Katie said that the APPG is \u2018definitely a good mechanism\u2019 to influence policy. But she added that there are \u2018so many other ways that you can get involved, like through emailing or student council.\u2019<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/WhatsApp-Image-2025-11-23-at-12.17.12--1-.jpeg\" class=\"kg-image\" alt=\"\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"2000\" height=\"1125\"  \/>Big Ben | Epigram \/ Alp Kobanbay<\/p>\n<p>Speaking to Saranya on maintenance grants returning for certain courses, she said, \u2018we would like to see this expanded to all students who need it, not just for particular courses.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>Discussing students from marginalised backgrounds, she argued the policy would be \u2018forcing their hand as to which courses they\u2019ll apply for.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>Epigram also spoke to Alex Sobel MP, chair of the event. He was surprised by the introduction of maintenance grants by the government, which was one of his \u2018big recommendations.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>However, he acknowledged concerns about the levy on international student fees, which will be used to fund the reintroduced maintenance grants. <\/p>\n<p>\u2018There&#8217;s a lot of international students I know whose families really struggle to get them here and actually haven&#8217;t really got enough money\u2019, he said. <\/p>\n<p><a class=\"kg-bookmark-container\" href=\"https:\/\/epigram.org.uk\/budget-will-see-overseas-tuition-fees-taxed-to-fund-return-of-maintenance-grants\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><\/p>\n<p>Budget will see overseas tuition fees taxed to fund return of maintenance grants<\/p>\n<p>The once axed grants for low income students will return from January 2027.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/09715-lpc22-scaled-e1683634569780-1400x0-c-default-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" onerror=\"this.style.display = 'none'\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>As a result, he warned the levy could result in universities having \u2018to close departments or even close entirely.\u2019 This would \u2018put the student maintenance grant at risk because that&#8217;s the funding stream\u2019, he added. <\/p>\n<p>Epigram asked Alex how to improve government accountability to students, since no government ministers had attended the APPG event.
