I\u2019m at Wythenshawe Hospital in South Manchester, which is a
\nleading centre for heart and lung transplants, treating patients across the
\nNorth West and beyond. <\/p>\n

Fun fact – surgeons here carried out the hospital\u2019s
\nfirst heart transplant back in 1987. <\/p>\n

On a chilly morning, the main out-patients department here
\nat Wythenshawe is quickly coming to life. The early morning cleaners have been
\nthrough, getting the unit ready for another day.<\/p>\n

Patients are arriving for
\ntheir appointments, many asking staff for directions to find exactly where in
\nthe hospital they need to be. And the out-patients caf\u00e9 is open, with nurses
\nand patients queuing for their coffee and snacks.<\/p>\n

Paul Joynson-Robbins, the hospital\u2019s director of nursing
\ntold me they had a \u201creally busy\u201d day yesterday. <\/p>\n

\u201cWe had more than 400 patients come through our Accident
\n& Emergency Department for treatment.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cBut the big one we\u2019re preparing for this winter is flu. We
\nhave a very active flu campaign, vaccinating our staff and the vulnerable
\npatients in our care.\u201d<\/p>\n
