{"id":594445,"date":"2025-11-26T06:39:13","date_gmt":"2025-11-26T06:39:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/594445\/"},"modified":"2025-11-26T06:39:13","modified_gmt":"2025-11-26T06:39:13","slug":"twenty-four-nigerian-schoolgirls-released-over-a-week-after-abduction","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/594445\/","title":{"rendered":"Twenty-four Nigerian schoolgirls released over a week after abduction"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">In a statement, a special adviser to the president confirmed that all the girls taken from the school in Kebbi State had been accounted for, noting that the incident triggered copycat kidnappings in two other Nigerian states.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Tinubu said that more personnel would be deployed to &#8220;vulnerable areas to avert further incidents of kidnapping&#8221;. <\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">In a separate post on X, Tinubu wrote: &#8220;The Air Force is to maintain continuous surveillance over the most remote areas, synchronising operations with ground units to effectively identify, isolate, disrupt, and neutralise all hostile elements.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">More than 1,500 children have been abducted from Nigerian schools since 2014, when 276 girls were abducted during <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/world-africa-68769102\" class=\"ssrcss-f6h2dj-InlineLink e1kn3p7n0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the infamous Chibok mass abduction<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">On Friday, at least <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/articles\/c3w7621xypyo\" class=\"ssrcss-f6h2dj-InlineLink e1kn3p7n0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">300 children and staff<\/a> were abducted from St Mary&#8217;s School, a Catholic boarding school, in Nigeria&#8217;s Niger state.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Fifty of those abducted from the school <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/articles\/cpwk5qzzppzo\" class=\"ssrcss-f6h2dj-InlineLink e1kn3p7n0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">have since escaped<\/a>, according to the Christian Association of Nigeria &#8211; but at least 250 remain unaccounted for. <\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">The main Catholic cleric in the region <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/articles\/cvgk50g1wzvo\" class=\"ssrcss-f6h2dj-InlineLink e1kn3p7n0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">has told the BBC<\/a> that Nigeria&#8217;s government is making &#8220;no meaningful effort&#8221; to rescue those still missing.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">The abduction at the school was the third to hit Nigeria in a week, forcing President Bola Tinubu to cancel his trip to the G20 summit, held in South Africa at the weekend, to deal with the crisis.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">UN education envoy Gordon Brown called on the international community to &#8220;do our utmost&#8221;
