{"id":59447,"date":"2025-04-29T06:05:10","date_gmt":"2025-04-29T06:05:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/59447\/"},"modified":"2025-04-29T06:05:10","modified_gmt":"2025-04-29T06:05:10","slug":"council-issue-update-on-22-free-car-parks-where-charges-will-be-brought-in","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/59447\/","title":{"rendered":"Council issue update on 22 free car parks where charges will be brought in"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Some parking charges are taking place in the coming weeks<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/0_Wirral-parking-charges-story-Photo-by-Colin-Lane.jpg\" alt=\"Fort Perch Rock car park in New Brighton.\" loading=\"eager\"  \/>Fort Perch Rock car park in New Brighton.(Image: Colin Lane\/Liverpool Echo)<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Wirral Council won\u2019t say when it plans to introduce controversial new parking charges at 22 car parks that are currently free as well as roads in three coastal areas.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">In September 2024, the local authority announced a plan to see charges <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.liverpoolecho.co.uk\/news\/liverpool-news\/list-25-free-car-parks-30005573\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">introduced at 22 car parks and on roads in three coastal areas where they\u2019re currently free.<\/a> Car parks where people already pay have now seen an increase with a \u00a31 charge brought in overnight.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">The plans quickly drew backlash from people in areas like <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.liverpoolecho.co.uk\/all-about\/new-brighton\" target=\"\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">New Brighton<\/a> and Bromborough with thousands signing petitions. However on December 3 at an environment and transport committee, Labour and Green councillors <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.liverpoolecho.co.uk\/news\/liverpool-news\/price-people-pay-new-car-30509226\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">voted to approve the new charges<\/a> as well as other increases to fees while Conservatives and <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.liverpoolecho.co.uk\/all-about\/liberal-democrats\" target=\"\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">Liberal Democrats<\/a> voted against after putting forward an unsuccessful alternative.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">The council has repeatedly said <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.liverpoolecho.co.uk\/news\/liverpool-news\/wirral-council-introducing-parking-charges-30529677\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">the changes are in line with a policy that was unanimously approved by all parties in 2023.<\/a> This parking strategy said the council could apply standardised parking charges across the borough as well as the ability to introduce traffic regulations where required.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Under the approved changes, all car parks owned by the council, roads within the <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.liverpoolecho.co.uk\/all-about\/birkenhead\" target=\"\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">Birkenhead<\/a> Controlled Parking Zone, and the roads listed above, it will cost \u00a31.20 for each hour of parking, with \u00a36 for over four hours between 8am and 6.30pm. It will cost \u00a31 to park overnight.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Charges are also expected to be brought in <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.liverpoolecho.co.uk\/news\/liverpool-news\/list-139-roads-soon-cost-30549114\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">for the following roads in three areas<\/a>. These are South Parade in <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.liverpoolecho.co.uk\/all-about\/west-kirby\" target=\"\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">West Kirby<\/a>, North Parade and Meols Parade in <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.liverpoolecho.co.uk\/all-about\/hoylake\" target=\"\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">Hoylake<\/a> and Meols as well as Kings Parade, Coastal Drive, Bayview Drive, and Marine Promenade in New Brighton and <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.liverpoolecho.co.uk\/all-about\/wallasey\" target=\"\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">Wallasey<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Parking permits for traders of \u00a3720 a year and <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.liverpoolecho.co.uk\/all-about\/wirral\" target=\"\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">Wirral<\/a> Council Park permits of \u00a3120 per year are available.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/0_New-double-yellow-road-markings-on-Coastal-Drive-in-New-Brighton.jpg\" alt=\"Charges are expected to be brought in for parts of Wallasey and New Brighton\" loading=\"lazy\"  \/>Charges are expected to be brought in for parts of Wallasey and New Brighton(Image: Liverpool Echo)<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">According to a council report, the money raised from the off-street parking charges is expected to be around \u00a3150,000 to \u00a3300,000 from 2026, with any income not expected to be generated until the summer in 2025.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Councillors also <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.liverpoolecho.co.uk\/news\/liverpool-news\/update-1m-goes-support-controversial-31044826\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">unanimously approved a \u00a31m bid for parking equipment<\/a> as part of the budget in March though there were <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.liverpoolecho.co.uk\/news\/liverpool-news\/four-key-things-learned-wirrals-31128032\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">attempts by Conservatives to get it removed.<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Nearly six months since the council made the decision,<a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.liverpoolecho.co.uk\/\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\"> the ECHO<\/a> asked for an update on when the new charges will be brought in. This included specifically on when charges will be brought in for those car parks that are currently free as well as when new car parking equipment will be installed.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">A spokesperson for the local authority said: \u201cThe changes to parking charges, as agreed by the committee, will be implemented in a phased manner with the first phase \u2013 the increase in fees at car parks where charges are already in place \u2013 taking place in the coming weeks with <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.liverpoolecho.co.uk\/news\/liverpool-news\/parking-enforcement-contract-losing-400000-30108597\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">signage going up in the car parks affected<\/a> and legal notices being published.
