{"id":594592,"date":"2025-11-26T08:15:22","date_gmt":"2025-11-26T08:15:22","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/594592\/"},"modified":"2025-11-26T08:15:22","modified_gmt":"2025-11-26T08:15:22","slug":"new-zealand-suitcase-murders-woman-gets-life-in-prison-for-killing-her-two-children","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/594592\/","title":{"rendered":"New Zealand &#8216;suitcase murders&#8217;: Woman gets life in prison for killing her two children"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">During <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/articles\/cn83jjx9pjvo\" class=\"ssrcss-f6h2dj-InlineLink e1kn3p7n0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">a trial<\/a> lasting more than two weeks, Hakyung Lee&#8217;s defence lawyers told the court that her mental health deteriorated after Jo&#8217;s death, and that she came to believe it was best if the rest of the family died together. <\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Lee tried to kill herself and her children by giving them <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/articles\/c1wgqpx3q1go\" class=\"ssrcss-f6h2dj-InlineLink e1kn3p7n0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">a dose of the antidepressant nortriptyline<\/a> mixed in juice, but got the dose wrong and woke up to find her children were dead, her lawyers said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Prosecutors argued that Lee&#8217;s was &#8220;a selfish act to free herself from the burden of parenting alone&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">After the killings, Lee changed her name and left New Zealand. She was arrested in South Korea &#8211; where she was born &#8211; in September 2022, and extradited back to New Zealand later that year.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">The court heard on Wednesday how the killings pained Lee&#8217;s and her husband Ian Jo&#8217;s families.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">In an emotional statement read out by prosecutors, Lee&#8217;s mother Choon Ja Lee  said she regrets not taking her daughter to a counsellor, noting that Lee had &#8220;no will to live&#8221; after Jo died of cancer in November 2017.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">&#8220;If she wanted to die, why didn&#8217;t she die alone?
