The funeral was the first public Catholic requiem for a<br \/>\nsenior member of the Royal Family in modern times.<\/p>\n<p>Friends cited by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tatler.com\/article\/lord-nicholas-windsor-duchess-of-kent-son-wife-separation\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Tatler<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailymail.co.uk\/lifestyle\/article-15109209\/duke-kent-son-splits-wife.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the Daily Mail<\/a> have<br \/>\nconfirmed that Lord Nicholas and Paola have been living separately<br \/>\nfor some time. Those close to the couple suggest there is no<br \/>\nexpectation of divorce, and that both are understood to hold<br \/>\ntraditional views on marriage.<\/p>\n<p>The couple met at a Millennium celebration in New York. They<br \/>\nbecame engaged in 2006 and were married in a civil ceremony in<br \/>\nLondon, followed by a religious wedding at the Church of St Stephen<br \/>\nof the Abyssinians in Vatican City. Their union marked the first<br \/>\npublic Roman Catholic wedding of a member of the Royal Family in<br \/>\ncenturies. Lord Nicholas had converted to Catholicism in 2001.<\/p>\n<p>Together they have three sons \u2013 Albert, Leopold and Louis \u2013 all<br \/>\nraised in the Catholic faith. Albert\u2019s baptism made quiet history,<br \/>\nbecoming the first royal infant to be baptised a Catholic since<br \/>\n1688.<\/p>\n<p>Lord Nicholas, who shared a close bond with his mother, attended<br \/>\nthe Requiem Mass with his sons. The congregation included the<br \/>\nPrince and Princess of Wales, the Princess Royal, the Duke of<br \/>\nGloucester, and other senior royals.<\/p>\n<p>The Duchess of Kent, remembered for her humility, musical<br \/>\ndedication and understated approach to royal duty, had spent her<br \/>\nlater years largely away from public attention, teaching music in<br \/>\nHull.
