{"id":596124,"date":"2025-11-27T01:02:16","date_gmt":"2025-11-27T01:02:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/596124\/"},"modified":"2025-11-27T01:02:16","modified_gmt":"2025-11-27T01:02:16","slug":"pat-cullen-calls-for-move-to-all-island-health-system-the-irish-news","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/596124\/","title":{"rendered":"Pat Cullen calls for move to all-island health system \u2013 The Irish News"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Sinn F\u00e9in MP and former head of the Royal College of Nursing, Pat Cullen says that the current status quo of two separate health services on the island of Ireland \u201cmakes no sense\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">The MP for Fermanagh and South Tyrone was speaking ahead of chairing a rural healthcare event in Enniskillen on Wednesday as part of Sinn F\u00e9in\u2019s Commission on the Future of Ireland.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">The potential benefits of further co-operation between the healthcare systems north and south of the border have become a hot topic, after British Medical Association chief Alan Stout called for an \u201call-Ireland GP service\u201d based on the Republic\u2019s medical card system last week.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">The comments came after<a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishnews.com\/news\/northern-ireland\/gp-vote-of-no-confidence-in-minister-a-cry-for-renewed-contract-talks-MEG7YBEK3FMD5DKPV2PJ3JHTUI\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishnews.com\/news\/northern-ireland\/gp-vote-of-no-confidence-in-minister-a-cry-for-renewed-contract-talks-MEG7YBEK3FMD5DKPV2PJ3JHTUI\/\"> a conference of GPs heard<\/a> from the Irish Medical Organisation\u2019s Dr Maiti\u00fa \u00d3 Faol\u00e1in tell how patient outcomes and GP retention had improved in the south in recent years.<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"c-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.irishnews.com\/news\/northern-ireland\/what-is-the-new-minimum-wage-rate-in-northern-ireland-2026-rise-announced-ahead-of-budget-YCKKOMJRZJESZJK2KIHZG6IV6U\/\" aria-hidden=\"true\" tabindex=\"-1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" data-chromatic=\"ignore\" alt=\"What is the new minimum wage rate in Northern Ireland? 2026 rise confirmed as budget is announced\" class=\"c-image\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/LBC3PWAVFJOPFI5JEKNU3SKKRM.jpg\"  width=\"800\" height=\"450\"\/><\/a><a class=\"c-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.irishnews.com\/news\/northern-ireland\/specialist-armed-psni-unit-deployed-at-belfast-christmas-markets-6DLY5XFAZBECFF6BK56OVDNJSM\/\" aria-hidden=\"true\" tabindex=\"-1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" data-chromatic=\"ignore\" alt=\"Specialist armed PSNI unit deployed at Belfast Christmas markets\" class=\"c-image\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/LA7BARQU5FF2LN2SUJ5K526Z2U.jpg\"  width=\"800\" height=\"450\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">As well as more than four decades of experience working in the healthcare system, representing a border area has left former nurse Cullen in no doubt of how health services could be transformed.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">\u201cThere\u2019s no part of health services we couldn\u2019t look at from an all-Ireland perspective, that would benefit patients primarily,\u201d the MP told The Irish News.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">\u201cWe cannot continue to work as two separate healthcare services for a population of seven million. It makes no sense to have two separate health services on an island of this size.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">\u201cThis isn\u2019t about stitching two failed services together, but looking at what\u2019s the best in both and bringing those together.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Losing staff from border areas who go to work in the southern health system is \u201ccompounding\u201d problems with the north\u2019s hospitals and GP practices, according to the Sinn F\u00e9in MP.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">\u201cIt\u2019s the discussion every day that I have every day with constituents in the office, it\u2019s most of the queries I get in, about 70% of the issues that are raised with me are definitely health related.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">\u201cIt\u2019s not just the hospitals, it\u2019s primary care as well. GP services, struggling to replace people that are retiring or moving on.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">\u201cWe are losing GPS to the south of Ireland, I was only talking to one two nights ago about her move.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">\u201cThey have got workforce pressures, but it isn\u2019t comparable at all. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">\u201cThey are moving to places where they can come home and put their head on a pillow and have a sleep, without worrying about leaving care undone and all of the other issues of a service that we all know is in a crisis.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Last week the story of a Fermanagh resident being treated with Stage 4 cancer lying on the floor of Altnagelvin Hospital was \u201cshocking\u201d for Ms Cullen.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">\u201cIt was absolutely shocking. It was shocking for the patient and their family, no patient in a first world country should be cared for on a floor.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\"><b>READ MORE: <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishnews.com\/news\/northern-ireland\/cancer-patient-left-lying-on-hospital-floor-for-50-hours-describes-turmoil-at-emergency-department-43IVO5WEQZBCHL6EENCQUI4JTQ\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishnews.com\/news\/northern-ireland\/cancer-patient-left-lying-on-hospital-floor-for-50-hours-describes-turmoil-at-emergency-department-43IVO5WEQZBCHL6EENCQUI4JTQ\/\"><b>Cancer patient left lying on hospital floor for 50 hours describes \u2018turmoil\u2019 at emergency department<\/b><\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">\u201cI also thought about those nurses, that would have wrecked them and that just symbolises the pressure those people are under and the pressure our constituents and communities are being put under.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">\u201cWe need to find other solutions, because keeping on doing what we\u2019ve always done isn\u2019t going to get us different results.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">The South West Acute Hospital in Enniskillen has been the subject of a campaign to restore emergency general surgery, after it was withdrawn by the Western Trust due to staffing issues in 2022.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">The former nurse says the handling of the removal of the service has led to a loss of confidence in health bosses from people in her constituency, but that she is willing to give them a \u201csecond chance\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">\u201cHow they managed the consultation and the overall management of the withdrawal of emergency general surgery has been anything but good.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">\u201cIt has led to people in Fermanagh losing confidence in the Trust leadership. It has led to a high level of anxiety and fear in the population there and has impacted significantly on the morale of front line staff.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Asked whether she herself has confidence in the health trust, Ms Cullen says: \u201cThe proof of the pudding will be in the eating.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">\u201cI\u2019m a great believer in people having to have a second chance and learning from their mistakes and that\u2019s what I\u2019m hearing from the Trust leadership.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">\u201cThat\u2019s where my focus is, not concerning myself with whether I\u2019ve got confidence in them.
