{"id":599189,"date":"2025-11-28T12:26:13","date_gmt":"2025-11-28T12:26:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/599189\/"},"modified":"2025-11-28T12:26:13","modified_gmt":"2025-11-28T12:26:13","slug":"uk-eu-weapons-fund-talks-collapse-in-blow-to-brexit-reset-and-economy","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/599189\/","title":{"rendered":"UK-EU weapons fund talks collapse in blow to Brexit reset and economy"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Sir Keir Starmer\u2019s Brexit reset suffered a major blow on Friday after negotiations for the <a class=\"post_in-line_link\" href=\"https:\/\/inews.co.uk\/news\/politics\/brexit-reset-defence-deal-unravelling-uk-threatens-quit-talks-4052031?ico=in-line_link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">UK to join a flagship EU defence<\/a> fund collapsed over Brussels\u2019 cash demands.<\/p>\n<p>UK minister for EU relations Nick Thomas-Symonds said it was \u201cdisappointing\u201d the two sides had failed to agree a deal for the UK to join the EU\u2019s Security Action for Europe (Safe) \u20ac150bn (\u00a3132bn) rearmament fund ahead of Sunday\u2019s deadline for project bids.<\/p>\n<p>The scheme is intended to use low-interest loans to boost Europe\u2019s arms production capacity and reduce reliance on US supplies in response to the growing threat from Russia and Donald Trump\u2019s withdrawal from the continent.<\/p>\n<p>New FeatureIn ShortQuick Stories. Same trusted journalism.<\/p>\n<p>But, the negotiations came unstuck over EU demands for the UK to pay billions to participate, despite Brussels lowering initial demand for up to \u20ac6.5bn to \u20ac2bn to \u201cpay to play\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>The i Paper reported on Thursday that the UK <a class=\"post_in-line_link\" href=\"https:\/\/inews.co.uk\/news\/politics\/cheaper-uk-university-fees-eu-students-clinch-brexit-reset-deal-4070424?ico=in-line_link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">submitted a counter-offer which envisaged a pay-per-project scheme<\/a>, with contributions calculated as a proportion of the value of each loan project the British defence industry was participating in.<\/p>\n<p>France has taken a tougher line on UK<\/p>\n<p>But the gap between the two sides proved impossible to bridge amid long-running EU splits over how important British involvement was. <\/p>\n<p>France has long been said to be taking a tougher line, with Germany keener on closer ties with the UK. <\/p>\n<p>Experts said this division could yet scupper negotiations in other areas of the reset including a youth mobility deal, a food and drink deal and energy cooperation, although Thomas-Symonds insisted \u201cstrong progress\u201d was being made in these areas.<\/p>\n<p>The i Paper on Thursday reported that the EU was continuing to demand <a class=\"post_in-line_link\" href=\"https:\/\/inews.co.uk\/news\/politics\/cheaper-uk-university-fees-eu-students-clinch-brexit-reset-deal-4070424?ico=in-line_link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">a waiving of international fees in a youth mobility deal,<\/a> though they were also discussing a potential compromise option amid UK resistance. <\/p>\n<p>Food and drink deal clash expected<\/p>\n<p>The two sides are also expected to clash over the food and drink deal, which will see the UK align with Brussels rules in this area to ease trade, as the British Government seeks exemptions from EU law in a number of areas.<\/p>\n<p>The failure of Safe negotiations is a blow to the Prime Minister after he signed a security pact with the EU at May\u2019s Brexit reset summit, which he said would \u201copen the door\u201d to joining Safe, \u201cproviding new opportunities for our defence industry, supporting British jobs and livelihoods\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>At the London event, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said a deal could be reached on Safe \u201cwithin weeks\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>A Commission spokesman on Friday said British companies could still benefit from a 35 per cent share in projects funded by Safe, but the UK was pushing for 50 per cent.<\/p>\n<p>Thomas-Symonds said: \u201cWhile it is disappointing that we have not been able to conclude discussions on UK participation in the first round of Safe, the UK defence industry will still be able to participate in projects through Safe on third country terms.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNegotiations were carried out in good faith, but our position was always clear: we will only sign agreements that are in the national interest and provide value for money.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe continue to make strong progress on the historic UK-EU May agreement that supports jobs, bills and borders.
