{"id":599474,"date":"2025-11-28T15:42:11","date_gmt":"2025-11-28T15:42:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/599474\/"},"modified":"2025-11-28T15:42:11","modified_gmt":"2025-11-28T15:42:11","slug":"uk-eu-defense-talks-collapse-challenging-post-brexit-relations","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/599474\/","title":{"rendered":"UK-EU defense talks collapse, challenging post-Brexit relations"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>LONDON (AP) \u2014 Talks on the U.K. joining a major <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/europe-defense-ukraine-russia-us-military-spending-dbc6133a2412ec02adf87078f2f2f5cc\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">European Union defense fund<\/a> have ended without agreement, the British government said Friday, in a blow to its <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/brexit-five-year-anniversary-uk-eu-economy-8a8b87fb3ddd9e9ac278469c291f97c1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">post-Brexit reset<\/a> with the 27-nation bloc.<\/p>\n<p>Prime Minister Keir Starmer, elected last year, pledged to repair ties with the EU strained by Britain\u2019s <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/brexit-ap-top-news-london-boris-johnson-international-news-e48bf51838ced94e2d92adba189b4944\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">acrimonious departure<\/a> in 2020. In May, the U.K. and the EU announced <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/uk-eu-summit-brexit-trade-3181228316c3d0cd736ecbf93a1eff43\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">new agreements<\/a> on trade, travel and defense that Starmer hailed as a \u201cwin-win.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The plan was for the U.K. defense industry to access a 150 billion euro ($170 billion) EU loan program, known as Security Action for Europe, or SAFE, set up to help Ukraine and the rest of Europe defend itself.
