He applied for asylum in 2024, which the Trump administration granted in April 2025.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmij60t1x000g3b6n3ke1nyb1@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Starting in 2011, Lakanwal worked with US forces, including the CIA. A senior US official told CNN the man had been vetted by intelligence agencies and was \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/us\/live-news\/washington-dc-shooting-national-guard-members-11-27-25?post-id=cmihu5rnv00003b5yhzup3tl4\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">clean on all checks<\/a>\u201d prior to working with US forces and being admitted into the country.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmij62wfo00163b6nkvt96vov@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Lakanwal will face a murder charge in connection with the shooting.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmij60t1x000h3b6nwvtotw0i@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Within hours of the Wednesday shooting, Trump began laying the groundwork to significantly bolster his crackdown on immigration, something that\u2019s been a major priority of his return to the Oval Office.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmiiz7vmi00003b6ns86lnx3t@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cThis heinous atrocity reminds us that we have no greater national security priority than ensuring that we have full control over the people that enter and remain in our country.
