\n The White House is doubling down on its aggressive immigration policies that helped deliver President Donald Trump<\/a> a second term, launching an interagency federal investigation into the shooting of two National Guard members in Washington, DC, while also directing the administration to take steps to stem migration into the US.\n <\/p>\n

\n The suspect in Wednesday\u2019s shooting, Rahmanullah Lakanwal, is an Afghan national who came to the US in 2021 under \u201cOperation Allies Welcome,<\/a>\u201d the Biden-era program to resettle Afghans in the wake of the US withdrawal from Afghanistan. He applied for asylum in 2024, which the Trump administration granted in April 2025.\n <\/p>\n

\n Starting in 2011, Lakanwal worked with US forces, including the CIA. A senior US official told CNN the man had been vetted by intelligence agencies and was \u201cclean on all checks<\/a>\u201d prior to working with US forces and being admitted into the country.\n <\/p>\n

\n Lakanwal will face a murder charge in connection with the shooting.\n <\/p>\n

\n Within hours of the Wednesday shooting, Trump began laying the groundwork to significantly bolster his crackdown on immigration, something that\u2019s been a major priority of his return to the Oval Office.\n <\/p>\n

\n \u201cThis heinous atrocity reminds us that we have no greater national security priority than ensuring that we have full control over the people that enter and remain in our country. For the most part, we don\u2019t want them,\u201d Trump said while addressing troops on Thanksgiving from Mar-a-Lago.\n <\/p>\n

\n Trump and his team believe they have a mandate to toughen immigration enforcement, with vows of deporting tens of millions of people central to his platform as he returned to the White House. That has included removal flights, Immigration and Customs Enforcement raids in US cities including Chicago and Los Angeles and an executive order suspending the refugee program, though there has been frustration<\/a> over lagging immigration arrests.\n <\/p>\n

\n On Wednesday evening, he swiftly cast blame on his predecessor for allowing the suspect into the country as he called for the reexamination of every person who entered the US from Afghanistan under the Biden administration. Trump has also expressed openness to deporting the suspect\u2019s wife and children, telling reporters, \u201cWe\u2019re looking at that right now – we\u2019re looking at the whole situation with family.\u201d\n <\/p>\n

\n The president\u2019s pledge only compounds efforts already underway from his administration. Earlier this week, CNN reported<\/a> prior to the shooting that the administration was moving to reinterview certain refugees admitted to the US during the Biden administration as part of a comprehensive review of their cases.\n <\/p>\n

\n By Thursday, US Citizenship and Immigration Services Director Joseph Edlow announced<\/a> that at Trump\u2019s direction, he had ordered \u201ca full scale, rigorous reexamination of every Green Card for every alien from every country of concern.\u201d Asked for additional details, including which countries are considered to be \u201cof concern,\u201d USCIS pointed CNN to 19 countries listed<\/a> in a June presidential proclamation, including Afghanistan, Iran and Venezuela.\n <\/p>\n

\n Edlow also announced updated guidance that authorizes USCIS officers \u201cto consider country-specific factors as significant negative factors when reviewing immigration requests.\u201d That policy, USCIS said in a statement<\/a>, will allow officers \u201cto more meaningfully assess whether an alien is a threat to public safety and national security.\u201d\n <\/p>\n

\n Hours later, the president intensified his rhetoric, calling for what he described as \u201creverse migration.\u201d\n <\/p>\n

\n \u201cI will permanently pause migration from all Third World Countries,\u201d Trump said in a lengthy post<\/a> to social media late Thursday evening, adding that he would \u201cremove anyone who is not a net asset to the United States.\u201d\n <\/p>\n

\n CNN has reached out to the White House and State Department on which countries would specifically be impacted.\n <\/p>\n

\n The announcement appeared to mark a major policy shift for the country \u2013 but one in line with the president\u2019s campaign trail promises to fundamentally reshape the US immigration system. Trump allies and aides commended the move.\n <\/p>\n

\n \u201cThis will prove to be the president\u2019s most politically popular policy, ever,\u201d said<\/a> Andrew Kolvet, spokesman for Turning Point USA, the group founded by slain conservative activist Charlie Kirk that caters to youth on American campuses.\n <\/p>\n

\n Advocates, meanwhile, have warned that Trump\u2019s rhetoric and actions could harm the Afghan community in the US.\n <\/p>\n

\n Shawn VanDiver, the CEO of AfghanEvac, said that the suspect\u2019s \u201cisolated and violent act should not be used as an excuse to define or diminish an entire community.\u201d\n <\/p>\n

\n More than 190,000 Afghans have resettled in the United States since August 2021, according to the State Department.\n <\/p>\n

\n Criticism of the administration\u2019s efforts in the wake of the shooting that has claimed the life of at least one of the victims drew a strong response from Trump\u2019s influential deputy chief of staff \u2014 and the top architect of his immigration policy.\n <\/p>\n

\n In response to an op-ed published by the Wall Street Journal\u2019s editorial board arguing that Afghan refugees \u201cshouldn\u2019t be blamed for the violent act of one man,\u201d Stephen Miller called the assertion<\/a> \u201cthe great lie of mass migration,\u201d while providing insight into how he views broadly views immigration.\n <\/p>\n

\n \u201cYou are not just importing individuals. You are importing societies. No magic transformation occurs when failed states cross borders.
